True true. If you live in Chapel Valley and you work at Cabela's you would probably have a good 20 minute drive through town at 8am of 5pm. Catron Boulevard and the Southeast Connector (Heartland Expwy) are great for getting from the Westside to the Interstate more quickly, but it's only convenient for people who live on the Southwest side like Carriage Hills, Autumn Hills, and Red Rock.
I wish there was a tunnel through the mountain so people could move more freely. If Saint Patrick Street or Fairmont Boulevard went through the mountain and connected with Sheridan Lake Road on the Westside traffic would be a breeze.
That's one bad thing about living in a hilly city. Sure, the mountains are beautiful to look at but they make getting around town very complicated.

The funnel effect is no fun. Byt the view from Skyline is worth it. Catron is nice. Or you can run up Deadwood Avenue and jump on I-90 there and scoot up the road too.
I deaded parts runs... South of Town usually someplace up on Deadwood avenue.

Rapid City has pretty much everything for all tastes but you just gotta be a little bit more specific so we can get to know you. Tractor Supply Company is going to be built out on I-90 by Cabela's and the new mall. That's just north of Rapid City but unfortunately the Northside isn't really the most attractive part of town so you may want to consider a commute. Do you have a price range?

Danny,
I appreciate all the information being given by you and the others on here. For the Time being, We are looking to rent a 3 bedroom House. Hopefully outside city limits and on some land that can be leased. We want to take about a year to find the JUST RIGHT home for the family as I intend on living in RC area for a number of years. Unless another promotion comes along. HA.
Right now, we are just looking for the basics. I have been in the Farming Retail business for 4 years now, and I have been a manager for retail businesses for over 15 years. Ranging from C-stores to the BIG BOXES like Target and ShopKo. My wife of 8 years and my two daughters. 7 and 8 are all excited about the move because we will now be in an area where we can hopefully have a small hobby farm, and enjoy the mountains. I am 38 years old and I like to hunt, fish, drink a few beers once in a while and watch a few football games and take care of business and take care of my family.
My wife is a computer person. I say computer person because she has not completed her degree yet but has a great job with the school district here in fargo, ND. We are hoping she can find something of the same nature and pay when we are settled in. She has looked up work and applied at a few places in RC, so we will see what comes up on that aspect.
I apoligize for not posting these earlier. I am running a business here in Moorhead MN and live in Fargo, so, i know how commute. haha.
Menards you say????? Thats one of my competitors.. Tell you what.. Once you get the hometown experience at TSC.. you will see the difference. We may not be as big in size at Menards, but TSC has 70 years experience in the people business. Runnings tries to do what we do, but we do it better. LOL.
I will check more often on this board as i see the informations in AWESOME on here. I hope I answered your questions. I want to get to know some people in RC and establish some friendships as well.
Thanks
Scott.

You do really have to be careful of these sites, people give their personal opinion, so okay I will give mine too.
I don't see any difference of "better" schools on the west side of town compared to the Robbinsdale (south side) or Rapid Valley area, or Black Hawk area, they are all part of the Rapid City Area School District. The only reason one school might "seem" better than the other is the family group or the PTA dumping money into the school that the district should be doing, making one school have an unfair advantage over another. Not that this or that school does better. When the parents don't volunteer or the PTA money dries up the schools are all equal.
The schools in Rapid Valley definintely do seem to try harder to bring new ideas into the learning curve ahead of other schools in the district, and they have received alot of critism for it, having 1 day a week that is a half day every week.
If you want good schools, don't send children to public schools any where in the US, go private or religious. They have several good religious schools in Rapid City, if you are of that mind.

Thanks for the information. Please see what i told Danny. My wife is really into the school thing. HA. What can I say.. I am a guy!! So, I will leave this up to my wife to respond on as she is really into the PTA and vollunteering and all that jazz.. as you can see i cannot spell worth a crap.. i guess that might be because i am more apt to working with numbers rather then letters. HAHA.
I appreciate your advise and information on here. I look forward to seeing and responding to more of those. Like I said. I am running a TSC in Moorhead, MN right now and Have been focused on that because its one of the biggest selling seasons and we want to do the best we can for our customers.. sooo.. that means we are working longer. HAHA.
Thanks again and i will post more later. If you see JEN (thats my wife) Her posts will be interesting. HA

No problem Scott, that's what these forums are for!
If you are looking to rent a 3 bedroom house just outside of town you may want to look at some of the new developments in Rapid Valley and Box Elder. Your commute to work would probably be less than 5 minutes. Not even kidding. Fargo and Rapid City are about the same size so I think you would have no problem adjusting. Picture a hilly Fargo with mountains in the background and that is what Rapid City will basically be like. I've never been to a TSC but we have a Runnings here and I go in very seldom but when I do I like the friendly "local feeling" service that I get. I have to admit, I like Menard's and I have a close cousin that is the head manager out there so we often get in on the discounts. Plus, they have everything you need. It is pretty big and conglomerate though.
If you like to hunt, fish, and throw a couple back you'll fit in just fine here in Rapid City. The Black Hills are a sportsman's paradise and there is plenty of recreation for both summer and winter. TSC is slated to be next to Cabela's so I can imagine you stopping in there a few times after work! Sam's is also set to move over there too. I guess it's supposed to be a whole new shopping plaza called "The Gateway at Rapid City" because it's going to be the first thing you see when you drive into Rapid City from the east. Now I understand your Passion for Menards. Its all good though. Thanks for the link. I google earthed Cabela's to see where it is at. Looks like a whole new development is going on there and is a great Location for the NEW TSC store I will be running. I am really excited about the whole thing. The new Style TSC store is so nice as well. The store I run now is much smaller then the new style we have now. The store I run was the BIG STYLE back when it was built which was in 1989. LOL. Now that we are a company of almost 850 stores. We have different sizes all over. haha. I am just happy that in our time of large companies falling apart. The one I work for will be hiring about 20 employees for this store. Or actually. I will be hiring that many. then it will be reduced to 15 after grand openings and so on. I will be looking for some good knowledgeable people to work for me in the areas of Farming, Ranching, Horseowners, Hobby Farmers, welders, Retail managing, and hardware.
I am not much of a cabela's fan. My Father in law and Mother In Law are HUGE FANS.. So I am sure they will be visiting it when they come to visit. LOL. I am more of a Scheels Fan. I hope to finally be able to find time to enjoy the Mother Nature in Rapid City and its surrounding area's. I know that the first year is all about the business, then I can pull back after I have established my New leaders and Team Members.
My wife... her id is g33kgrl aka Jen. She is the one that is taking care of the looking for a home thing. I will pass this information you have given to her. So what kind of work do you do in RC? I understand the wages are low there... I have not received my Wage Survey yet from human resources yet, but on a average. we pay from 8 to 9 dollars for PT Team Members and 9 to 10 for FT. and in the teens for Specialty positions (AM, TL's, Receivers, Clothing and Feed Specialists). This is on a company average so it could be off by a buck or two depending on the market.
Well, I hope to see you when we open in April sometime or sooner. Once we are up and Running, You will see the difference between Runnings and TSC. That is my Main Competitor. Menards touches base on some areas of our business, but We match Prices, so whatever they sell and we have the same thing we match the price. If you want to know more about Tractor Supply Company. Please check out our Website. http://www.tractorsupply.com
If you look at our Mission and Values.. You should be impressed.
Thanks again for the information.. It is fortunate that I have a day off today to respond.
Scott.

Scott, I am glad that you are enthusiastic about your move to Rapid City. It really is a nice place to live and raise a family. If you like Scheels then you'll be glad to know that a brand new one is almost done in Rushmore Crossing which is Rapid City's newest mall right across I-90 from TSC and Cabela's. We have one now, but it's in the Rushmore Mall and it's moving out. I look forward to stopping in at TSC when it is done too. I left a link for the "Gateway" map and that will give you an idea of what your business park will look like.

Scott, when/where did you work for Target/Shopko?? I was an ETL in the Omaha area for many years. My hubby was too. He left Target to join Pamida when Shopko owned them. He's now a Regional Manager for Pamida and we live here in Rapid. He has to drive to Montana, Wyoming, NDak, SDak and western Nebraska stores.
I pm'd your wife with a realtors name. She's excellent and will send you to the right person if she doesn't have any homes for rent.
There's a ton of land north of I90 around the area your new store is being built. I friend of mine used to live in a manufactured home on 3 acres out there. She just moved back to California a couple months ago. She sold her home tho (with the realtor I pm'd!) You could also live south of town, near Hermosa and have a quick drive into town on Hwy 79, then on Elk Vale Rd. You'd have to commute 15-30 minutes tho. There's a lot of land down there, not sure about rentals tho. I know that Hermosa's school goes Mon-Thurs full days, and has Fridays off. A boy on my sons flag football team lives in Hermosa.

I was a ETL for Target back in 2004. I stuck it out only a year. That is when they decided to only PROMOTE FRESH COLLEGE GRADUATES TO STORE MANAGERS. I then went and worked for Pamida (Shopko/Pamida at the time) It was an aweful experience. Not the company, The Store Manager I was working for. That store has since been closed. It was in Wahpeton ND. Your husband might be familier with that Manager. But, Since I went to TSC, Life has been pretty good. I am on my way to being a DM someday.
My wife got your e-mail and I thank you for the information. I plan on living in that area for awhile (Again, Unless I am promoted to area manager or District Manager.. I will stay in Rapid City and run the store until it does happen.
I wonder if I know your husband. LOL. Pamida called their positions differently then some companies. Was he a District Manager at first? Oh well. I respect Pamida. I just did not Respect that manager.
Ok. Enough negative stuff. HAHA. Keep in touch with us. Its nice to know people who have the RETAIL knowledge.
Thanks agian.

Yep. Fresh out of college graduates. And they only stay a year before they quit because they thought the job was a "bark orders from their desk" type job.
I promoted back in the 90's before they thought up that stupid idea. 70% college graduates, 5% internal promotions, 25% external hires with experience. What a crock.
My hubby likes his job, but hates all the travel. He has his good days and his bad days with Pamida. The mileage checks are nice, tho!
