I read about chislic in SD Magazine but have never eaten it. One thing I miss about South Dakota is the great specialty food we cannot get out here at the end of the world...like kuchen, ring bologna (don't laugh!) good summer sausage and KUCHEN! Sigh!
Oh, Kuchen. I used to have it a lot when I visited my great-grandparents in Eureka. My mom would go to the bakery and buy quite a few of them and put them in the cooler. My favorites were the chocolate chip and apple kuchens. I find this pleasant to know that I can find kuchen at some of the grocery stores in Marion and Freeman. I have ancestors who settled in both the Marion-Freeman and Eureka areas and both are German-Russian areas.
Once in a while, a person can find kuchen in Sioux Falls. Not too long ago, Sunshine was advertising on 92.5-KELO that they had kuchen.
Ahhhh Ring bologna....I love that stuff I just ate it for dinner last night with Mashed Potatoes.....I'd eat Dakota Brand Ring Bologna every night if I could
prarierose........chislic is not hard to make...when my kids were growing up & we were eatting a lot more venison, we ate it very often....Mt Daughter called it ''toothpick'' meat, because we always allowed the kids to use toothpicks instead of silverware! she is almost 23, now, and her son asked me to make ''toothpick meat''!
debey, Thanks for the Wikipedia link. I mistakenly thought that chislic was always made from mutton which we do not eat, but beef or venison are doable. Must give it a try.
Also, must correct the information about ice cream. It has not been downsized to 3/4 gallon...it is 1.75 quarts which is a whole 1/2 pint more! Wow!
Had a Home made Pepper steak the other night, turned out pretty good actually (not enough steak though LOL, never enough meat for me lol). Might have to put the recipe up here for others to enjoy. Most expensive part of it was the meat i think.

Yum! I was just thinking about that this week!
