Kbear. I too remember Mount Rushmore before all the renovations. It was a much more natural feeling place with a sinple large terrace overlooking the monument. Parking was free too. They still have some bomb ice cream though! There are still shootouts in Keystone and Deadwood during the summer. I think you may be thinking about the Chuckwagon Supper and Show near Reptile Gardens. It's still there.
The Sands Motel has changed names throughout the years. Sleep Inn, Knight's Inn, and now Sands. I remember the Amber Inn across the street from Safeway too. Now it's a large bank. Rapid City does still have quite a few old motels on North Street. As dumpy as many of them are, the neon signs are kinda of cool and make for great photography.
I think the Best Western Town and Country has had several facelifts in the past decades. It's been there since I can remember.

Kbear, I love nostalgia and thank you for sharing that with us. Yup, the whole area out in the Hills has changed drastically since I was young. They even have a neat new highway in the Badlands now. Not sure if I think those things are an improvement, but I don't like change anyway.

Kbear, the VW dealership in Rapid city was named Old Erv's Home. It was just up the road from Camp Rapid, otherwise known as the National Guard Camp. I believe Old Erv's closed sometime in the 80s.

Thanks for the info. It's always interesting to me what becomes of the things we once knew. Back in my hometown, when I go up familiar streets I give people what I call the "Ustabee" tour. No doubt a lot of us could do the same.

On Campbell st a block or so behind Kmart was an Ice Cream shop cant remember the name, it is now Campbell Street Cafe.
Montgomery Wards was downtown.
Skyline drive was the place for alone time, if you had 4wd there were many "side" roads to explore.
Skateland was just outside Ellsworth main gate, it's now a mini mall.
Shakeys was the family place to eat with live piano music.
Robinsdale lanes had an indoor shooting range, might have been prior to being a bowling alley.
These are a few of the things I remember.
