I'm glad you like it, MJ. I always thought it was really pretty when it's lit up at night and always wondered why people make fun of it. Even the promoters of it come up with their "corny" slogans. Guess they figured they may as well join others in jesting about it or something. I think it's some pretty good art and it's interesting to see what the new pics will be every year.

I drove through last, I think it was the day before Thanksgiving... but it was around then. I wanted to go up Highway 37 to Huron, just a different route, and I go through Forestburg (Debey ). I stopped a gas station on the first corner w/ a stoplight...but the girl there inside the store was very friendly. I was hungry... I hadn't eaten anything all day...but there were no fast food places on that side of town....so I ended up driving that main east-west route and eventually found a BK on the other side of town . But then on the way back north, I did drive by the Corn Palace.

Did you maybe stop at Kwik Phil~the one by the stoplight at the corner of Havens and Burr? There are several gas stations right out there when you come into town. You should've gone right past the south McDonald's. And if you get on the road that goes past Walmart, there are a few fast food places right across from Walmart. We used to have a south Burger King, too but they closed that up a while ago. It just amazes me how so many places can keep going, but I guess having the interstate right here helps a lot.

Wow I've never stayed in a State Park here in South Dakota but have in several other states (Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri to name a few) and have never heard of having to need a reservation at one of them. Seems kind of harsh to those that are traveling and don't know about the reservation system here.

We'll be heading back to Iowa on the 21st and some of these campgrounds/attractions seem interesting enough but alas we'll be time restrained . Have stopped at Wall Drug Before, wasn't too impressed, mostly high prices and a tourist trap me thinks now a days. I remember my mom and dad telling me all about it when we were younger and they were doing their pow wow travelings, they said its changed alot now too. Do love the buffalo Wizz Barbeque sauce we got there two years ago though lolol.

Maybe I worded that wrong. Reservations aren't required, but they're highly recommended especially for the weekends. Reservations can be made 90 days prior to arrival. Many of the state parks are completely full, though. I have stayed at state parks in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Arizona, and Missori. I do think South Dakota does have some nice state parks.

i camped in a tent at rondees behind the motel. it was fairly new. they have space for big rigs. there is another camp almost beside that one. lots of thunderstorms in mitchell. i had plenty of adventures running across the lot many nights to stay in bathroom during some of the severe storms. also the police chased a florida prison escapee all over the area. someone suggested i stay at the burger king (something else now,i think) while the chase was on. i did. also cabelas was there and i loved going there. there is a lake going toward the other end of mitchell but i didnt go that far (long walk). also doll museum and at time i was there a safe museum. elder man ran that in summer. as for spearfish, chris campground is good. they have a website . they also only open from about may til end of aug. as do many in sd. black hills area. there is another one just before that one, but bryce will help you pick out a space and park. his wife is lanna, but many people call her chris. its actually from their last name of christensen. the road they are on is called christensen and is just a short distance north of k mart. wal mart is not far. plenty of things in spearfish. lots of good eating. happy trails!

Jammie, I stopped the one at the SE corner of Havens & Ohlman (I had to look at Google maps ). I should've taken the first exit to the east. I ended up seeing a lot of Mitchell though!

Living in Mitchell and being an avid camper, here is the run down on my thoughts about the Mitchell area campgrounds.

R & R - Behind Super 8. Awesome smaller campground. Lots of trees, clean pool, excellent staff. We go there ALOT!!! They have WiFi access and cable, also.

Rondee's - By Days Inn. Not so many trees. Kind of bare. Wasn't very fun. I can't remember if you get water slide access or not.

Dakota Campground - Right off the 2nd Mitchell exit if you come from the East. Quite Shady. Lots of "boisterous" people on the weekend. Nice place to camp. More for adults on the weekend.

Lake Mitchell Campground - spaced VERY closely together. Loud and kind of dirty.

Family Fun - Betts Road exit. Not Family Fun. Enough said.

Chamberlain has a great campground called American........something. It has beach access. Fishing. Trees. Nicely spaced camping spots.

Hope this info is helpful. Remember my oppinions are not always shared by others. This is just what I have found when taking 4 kids camping.
