Planning a trip. places to camp along I-90
Hello. My sisters and I are planning a "sisters trip" next June, and we will be traveling across SD from east to west on I-90. One of our husbands is bringing their 30 ft. camper and we plan to stay in campgrounds along or near I-90 while we see the sights. We know about the usual KOA's, etc. What we're wondering is if any of you good people would know of small city campgrounds that are low cost, but would have electric, water, hot showers? Thanks. Linda

If you would like to stay near Sioux Falls, here is a link for a campground that is located between Sioux Falls and Brandon off I-90.

There is a really nice KOA off the Elk Vale Road exit (Exit 61) in Rapid City.

I know you said along I90, but Garretson, SD would be a fun stop along the way (it's 10 miles north of I-90). There is either Palisades State Park there to stay or the city campground. If I'm not mistaken, the city park might even be free. All of the state parks in SD are VERY nice, but require reservations in the summer. Especially if it's over a weekend. You might be okay without a reservation during the week. Brandon, SD has a very nice state park and that's along I-90.
Here's the link for the state park information: www.campsd.com
Chamberlain, SD has a WONDERFUL city park called the American Creek Campground. Has the requirements you're looking for and it's waterfront on the Missouri River, so you could get a gorgeous view!! Here's the link: www.americancreekcampground.com It's also walking distance to the downtown area where there are a couple nightspots and one VERY good small town mom and pop place to go to for breakfast.
Have fun on your vacation!!! South Dakota is a fabulous place to visit in the summer!!!

I second nanjosbrand on this one. Chamberlain has a few campgrounds, and it's right along the Missouri River... It's a really beautiful area. Cedar Shores also has a campground, which is next to a Resort Hotel and Marina... Cedar Shore Resort, Chamberlain, South Dakota
I haven't camped there, but I have stayed in the hotel for a family reunion. Some of my relatives camped at the campground adjacent to the hotel, and really enjoyed it.
If you do camp in the Chamberlain/Oacoma area, I highly recommend stopping at Al's Oasis. They also have a campground:
Al's Oasis
Casey's Cafe in Chamberlain is another must-stop, in my opinion . Home-cooked meals, and their hamburgers are the highlight. They've been featured in Reader's Digest & the NY Times. Good luck on your trip!

Al's Oasis~if you go there, be sure to order a piece of their cream pie~UMMMM.
You could also make a stop in Mitchell and see the Corn Palace. It's not special enough to be a final destination, but since you're passing this way, I think you'll find it kind of neat.
And if you have a bit of time while you pass through Sx. Falls~I'd visit Falls Park and walk the Phillips to to the Falls Sculpture Walk.

Mitchell has a campground near the Super 8 Motel off Exit 332. It is close to restaurants, gas stations, and other services.
Wall/Badlands area have camping areas within close proximity to the interstate.
Chamberlain would be a very scenic area to camp with the Missouri River and the river bluffs. It would be a memorable area with the landscape and would have has very beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It was neat seeing one or the other when driving through. I strongly recommend Chamberlain for an overnight camping spot.

Yes, actually we have four campgrounds that I can think of. Just don't ask me the names of them. There's one by exit 332, just like you said. There's also one out on Betts Road, one by the Lake, and one just east of town on Havens. Maybe Debey has more accurate info on them cause I've just never paid much attention to their names or addys.

Jammie, I still remember the first time I went to the Corn Palace. We went to Chamberlain for the family reunion at the resort hotel. We lived up by Aberdeen, and I was probably in junior high. I told my dad that we should stop to see the Corn Palace in Mitchell on the way back.
They had some sort of arts & crafts thing in the gym part... Of course, my mom was in paradise ...but it was a great trip!
The last time I was in Mitchell, I made sure I drove by to see the exterior... it always looks so cool!
