Atheists want God stricken from inaugural oath. Check out this link:
Atheists want God stricken from inaugural oath - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090115/ap_on_go_ot/obama_under_god - broken link)

This is a pretty sad state of affairs. Whether this mental giant believes in God or not, I don't think it give him the right to challenge other people's beliefs in such a manner. The article doesn't say, but I'm willing to bet he's citing "separation of church and state" as a basis for his case. If Obama wants to say "So Help Me God" or if he decides not to, in my opinion has zero to do with how he does his job...

It sounds like Obama wants to say this at the end of his speech for himself and he's not dictating that it be permanently added. Freedom of religion has two sides and this man is actually infringing on President Obama's right to practice his religion. If Obama wanted it permanently added to the speech (much like "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance) that would have more of a case.

I think if Obama believes in God and wants to say it, so be it.

I dunno. I just can't seem to get a grasp of what's been going on in our country the last several years. First of all, I can't understand atheism and secondly, it seems like it's about time we stand up to people like that. If they don't want to believe, that's their choice but they need to stop pushing their agenda onto others.

Ok I'm not an atheist (but shortly may becoming one lol) but am of one of the alternative religions. Everyone keeps stating that "they" are trying to force their beliefs on others or such but not one of you is saying the opposite that God Fearing folks are trying to force their religion on the non god fearing folks. Apparently we have all forgotten that Under God was ADDED to the Pledge of the allegience and never appeared in the original. In God We Trust Was ADDED to the Currency, it was not there in the beginning. Whose forcing what on who????

I could care less about what he says in his speech as I believe in Religious FREEDOM. One of the founding principles of this country but sooo many have forgotten that or seem to interpret that that only means christianity or catholicism and not EVERY RELIGION. Wether you agree with it our not. We will never have religious tolerance so long as theres thinking like that. Just as we will never have world peace because no matter what, there will always be one person that wants or has to have control over someone else. Religion is a personal belief and I feel that whatever one wants to beleive so long as they aren't harming themselves or another, then they are right in whatever they believe. I mean after all, there is no concrete evidence that any Diety exists and its what people believe in their heart.

Not to be offensive but wouldn't standing up to "those People" be pushing your agenda onto others.

No offense taken. No, I don't believe that it would be pushing my agenda off on others. The article states that Obama wants to say those words at the end so that should be his choice. He shouldn't be forced TO say them, but neither should he be forced to refrain from saying them.

Personally, it just looks like it's someone who wants to get into the spotlight by bringing this up.

Homesteader makes an excellent point. Why is "Under God" added to so many political things? I think any religious agenda should be removed from government. It just causes too much conflict and has no purpose.

Jammie,

You're right again. Obama is a Christian and he wants to bring Christ into his oath. The damn atheists need to leave it alone! Atheists and PETA are made for each other, they hate the same things. They hate all Gods and man in general. They want man to die off, without any hope for an after-life, and have animals take over. PETA is using this same logic to overthrow Spearfish.PETA and other crazy liberal activist groups are weakening America and will expedite our imminent collapse -- unless we "do" stand up to them.Same crazy logic in California -- people voted for Prop 8 (2008), and Prop 22 in 2000, but liberal atheists "still" want it overturned.

It doesn't matter who's in charge, these nutjobs will never be happy.I bet these nuts would be real happy if Ingrid Newkirk was running the country. It seems like everything in America is offensive to these radicals. They're lucky to be in America, where we have the First Amendment. In many other countries, except for Europe and Canada, these God-hating liberals would be dead. They hide behind laws and a country founded on Judeo-Christian principles, but refuse to admit it.These same people would be the first in line -- to sell America out to a foreign invader...with the help of the ACLU.These sick liberals would twist things and say it is unconstitutional to defend our country from a foreign invader. The same radical ACLU that defends NAMBLA, a gay mens club that wants to rape boys. The ACLU and NAMBLA wants the age of consent for boys to be lowered to 12 -- so they can rape boys. They also promote nudism communities that are hotbeds for pedophiles. The same people...atheists. See a pattern here? If you do believe in God...these people are demons. They want your kids next!

What value system do they go by? If it's "do unto others", that's from the Bible -- whether they like it or not.Morality in general is religious based.Atheism is synonymous with anarchy. What would be the laws of an anarchist-atheist government? I know! Anything goes! It would one big endless hedonistic pornographic orgy. If these athesists adopted any of our current law codes, it would be hypocritical because they are virtually all Bible based. They're a bunch of selfish hedonistic bohemians. If America was run by a bunch of bohemians...I'd rather move to Saudi Arabia.

All major religions are good...until they are perversed. We all learn from books, and everything we buy has a manual...why not life.

Ignore these people -- that hate their parents and their country. Resist them at all costs.Don't let them hijack your community with their kiddie porn mentality.

If people want to vote to change things -- thats fine. Don't let radical ACLU paid judges change the laws without our vote -- first.

but...

I don't think Under God should be a part of the oath, as in written into it, but if the person going into office wants to add it that's their choice, and everyone else should respect that. This is an oath Obama is saying for an office he is being sworn into, so he should say it if he likes. But I don't think it should be part of a speech that the crowd says, you know what I mean?
I have to agree, Jammie, Athiests are coming from the point of view that the religious ones have been forcing their view on non believers for years. They're standing up for a change.
But in this case, I think the Athiests should respect Obama's choice.
I would not define myself as Athiest, but have you ever asked yourself HOW you know God is real? You can't see him, you can't have a 2 way conversation with him. What if someone 500 years ago made up a fictional story and over the years everyone has come to believe it? You may say there is history of him being around for thousands of years, but how do you know it wasn't all made up? You didn't see him 1000 years ago. Just something to ponder.
Wow, Kwame, some harsh hatred tone coming from you.
