As for me,
People think that we have a northern accent, especially those who from the South and the coasts. Actually, I have an accent more closely resembling that of Iowa and Nebraska than the Minnesota/Fargo type accent, although I sometimes hype it up for humor.
Another thing is that people say that they have been to the Black Hills or Sturgis. I can remember the Sturgis comment when I was in New Orleans at a restaurant (in high school for a church youth gathering) and mentioned that I was from South Dakota. The restuarant worker said that he has been to Sturgis.
Most of the people I have come across from other areas are curious about South Dakota and may have the impression that it is rural and cold, which it can be both in certain areas and certain times but is not always the case. It would be no different than South Dakotans' perceptions of other places such as Alabama and New York, which are sometimes exaggerated.

I laugh my head off at that one and give my coworkers and relatives from Iowa a hard time with that joke. They usually have a good comeback.
Minnesota and Iowa get a lot stereotypes from South Dakotans in my area, southeastern SD.

It's pretty funny telling some people I am from South Dakota. They get this blank look on their face and I know they are thinking "Now where in the heck is that?" It amazes me the amount of people in this country who don't know where South Dakota is or that there is even a South Dakota!

Mount Rushmore kind of looks like clouds in a blue sky unless you're really close too. It's better than the previous ones we had though. I liked the green and gold ones we had back in the '90s but I guess they were too hard to read.
