Default Corn Palace in Mitchell

Tonight I watched "Unwrapped" on the Food Network which featured the Corn Palace with the Lewis and Clark theme in an episode produced in 2004. The presentation was very well done as they described the history of the building, as well as the process of the design and cutting of the corn and color selection. The old photos of the original building were very interesting. I have only visited Mitchell once, but it was in September several years ago when they were re-doing the design and it was fascinating to watch. I don't think it gets the attention it deserves.

Hey Rose, that's cool and I wish I could've watched it.

You know, I think you're right. It's often joked about and even the promotors of it have silly billboards and advertising for it. But it's actually a beautiful old building and it's so artistic the way they make pics out of crops. I actually get tired of hearing people say things like, "a building made of corn" because that is such a fallacy. It's actually very beautiful at night when it's lit up. I can go to the end of the street and see the domes.

I first visited the Corn Palace sometime in the 60's as a youngster with my parents. I actually still remember the first time.

I would venture to say that we still visit it yearly at least once over the last 10 years. Our kids even as adults like to go there with us. Even if its a two hour drive from home, Mitchell has always been one of our favorite destinations, of course the Corn Palace helps.

I am from PA and have visited SD 3x's. The first time we visited, the Corn Palace was advertised more than Mount Rushmore. It was well worth the visit.

That and Wall Drug. I remember our many trips up into the Dakota's & Minnesota each year and seeing the signs for Wall Drug. If I remember correctly, we even seen one in Kansas once. But not sure.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a sign in Kansas!
Wall Drug signs are all over.

I agree that the Corn Palace is an impressive sight at night. I know it gets bashed for being the World's Largest Bird Feeder, but the process of changing the murals is quite fascinating. I think that in itself would be a great documentary.

You're right, you know they change the design at least yearly and it takes so much work to complete. I went to the circus in the building several times. It's unique.
