I've been giong to Keystone almost every year since '82 to unwind and do my riding after working Bike Week. Something about that hokey little tourist town just calls to me, so I've always wanted to move there and open a shop. I usually stay in Keystone for up to a month to enjoy the area sans the mass crowds of the annual prilgrimage to 2 wheeled Mecca. I can't get enough of the things to do and see in the Black Hills . Over the years I have met people and done business and became friends with folks whom, Keystone ,has been for the most part good to them. I have even got caught up in feuds between local business owners and an SD that was getting out of control. Glad to say the folks I know have great respect for the current SD. I have skills and craft talents that lend well to the area, and understand fully the seasonal nature of business in Keystone. I grew up just south of Pittsburgh,Pa with deer in the yard and miles of forest that all of us kids roamed and played. I've lived in a one light town in upstate N.Y. with nice toasty -20 weather and tons of snow and nice biting wind to go with it all. I have spent a few years doing my home work. I'll get used to the cold again. If not... Well, I'm also an avid RVer. I can change my front yard and climate with just a few tanks of gas.
For the most part the 24 years I have lived in southern California have been good to me and I have enjoyed my life here. I'm really gonna miss working at the Southern California Renniasance Faire. But this is no longer a part of the California , USA that I came to those years ago, so it is time to get out while the "gittin's" good.
I know exactly what I'm "in for" by moving to Keystone.

Tri, welcome to South Dakota!!!! I almost envy you for being able to live in Keystone. It is so beautiful there. It's got to be one of my favorite towns in the Hills. (Not that I don't like all of them. Spearfish Canyon is awesome!) You're also fortunate to have your own business there cause it'd be hard to find a full time year-round job there. They're also pretty slow with moving snow out in that area of the Hills during the winter. You are in for a beautiful life there cause you already know that nature and wildlife are all around. I wish you luck and you seem so enthusiastic that I know it will work out for you and you'll be happy. Be sure to stay with us and let us know how things are going. Until recently, we didn't have anyone from the Hills area to answer questions that newcomers had. Now we've been lucky to have a few from out there and it's wonderful. It's sad because when I was a teen, we all dreamed of living in Southern California and now none of us would even consider it with the inflated prices and none of us want to be in the minority. You'll have a chance to see Crazy Horse as it's becoming a reality and be sure to keep us posted on that, too. Have a wonderful trip and again, welcome to So. Dak.

Default Looks Like We've Got Another Exile! =)

Hey Tri,

Congratulations on your decision to move! It looks like I won't be the only "exile from Ca" moving to South Dakota this year. I'm a native of Orange County, and like you I decided last year that I had had enough of the "rat race" and was sick of living in an area where American citizens are a virtual minority. We moved up to Montana, but unfortunately, there is no work here, so we're planning to move to Sioux Falls next. I think I'm gonna miss the mountains and the deserts of Ca and MT, but what can you do?

Just curious - what's Keystone like in terms of day-to-day living? What are some of the pros and cons?

Good luck on your move!
-
Bill

Thanks for the welcome, Jammie. I've seen the progress of Crazy Horse since the forehead was first started in the early 80's . The resuraunt there makes a pretty tasty buffalo stew, so I make a point of stopping at C.H. every year to at least have the stew. I'm also a bit of a musium geek , so I spend quite a few hours reading the plaques on all of the displays. I've lived in the Inland Empire since '84, but I know my way around the Black Hills better than I know my way around the I. E. and So Cal. Go figgure...

Exile , I feel for ya man. For me it is not so much about being a racial minority , since in my proffession , it pays well to be color blind. Also I have many friends and aquaintances of all of the colors of the racial rainbow. However, what I can no longer tolerate is living in an increasingly dirty ,disease infested, crime infested,no manners, uncivilized, third world sh#thole providence of meheeco. Thanks to our treasonous corupt (both parties are in on this) dirtbag leaders and scumbag big corporations. California (and other states) are carbon copies of that cesspool mexico. Sorry folks, the invasion is a very sore subject to me. I now know what it is like to see ones home systematicly invaded and occupied under the guise of immigration by a hostile and very degenerate people who now feel that they have the numbers to look you in the eye and tell United States citizens of all ethnicities they are taking over and this is now meheeco.
As to life in Keystone... with a population of around 319 at last count, and one stop light,(unless you count the one at the top of the hill at the entrance to the big heads)it's small town life. Even during Bike Week the side walks pretty much roll up around ten at the latest. But during the day Keystone and the surounding area has quite a lot of things to do as long as you can keep thinking like a tourist. If not you will become boared very quikly. Everyone in town knows everyone else and you will have the usual small town cliques and politics. Crime is almost nonexistant. If you have younguns ,from what I understand the Hill City school district is where they would go , and it is top notch. Many of the jobs and business are seasonal. A bit before Memorial Day to mid to late October weather permitting. There is a growing artisan and crafts population as the off season is good for creating your inventory for the next season. So you had better be good at budgeting or have an extra game plane or two. I,ve always been an artist/crafter of multiple disaplins and have a fair enough business head (for an artist) to not be a starving artist. So for me life in Keystone will suit me fine.

hey T Doc,
I'm over in Rialto. I'm one of the original founders (est. 1988) of the Empire Tattoo Studio shops in Rialto , Riverside , Redlands , and Upland. (we sold off the Upland shop about 10 yrs ago,so now affiliated in name only) I have a few last business obligations to tie up over the next week , then I'm outta here. I'll actually have dual residencey for awhile , as I have many toys and tools to transport up to S.D.

Riverside, California? That's where Reggie and the gang used to be from in comic books when I was young. Has that also turned into Mexifornia?

Most of the border states have been so colonized by the invaders that it is all becoming a third world dump. Just like most every place south of the former United States border , and it's only getting worse with each day.
