Scotland SD questions
Hi,
I found a house in Scotland for pretty cheep. I live in Oregon now.
Does anyone live in Scotland that can answer a few questions for me?
Anytime a move is made with unknowns it can be a little scarry.
I have found info such as it is a small town, but inside info would be good too.
Thanks

I know a lady who I used to work with who was from Scotland. She worked in Sioux Falls and commuted everyday for work until the gas prices skyrocketed. It is a small town--I have driven through Scotland, and would have to say that houses would be cheap. It's about an hour (at least) from Sioux Falls. There's one gas station and a nursing home. I would find it interesting if anyone from Scotland posts on here.....guess we'll find out!!

This is getting interesting. About 1 year ago we got a post from a mailman in Scotland, Europe. He was inquiring about a dead letter that had been laying in his office for 100 hundred years or so. It was addressed to someone in Scotland, South Dakota. As I recall, we did find the zip code for Scotland, SD so he could forward the letter to the postmaster there. I am not sure what other info we dug up on Scotland, SD but you may want to search for that thread. It appears that the spirits of Scotland are beginning to stir. Keep in touch.

Yes, I'm sure houses are very reasonable there. If you don't need employment and you're willing to drive to Yankton or Sioux Falls to do the majority of your shopping, etc. it's an ok place to live. They do have a hospital there and the small town hospitals are fine for the less severe things. It wouldn't be my choice, but our circumstances may be different. Good luck to you.

I am a little late replying here but I work in Scotland and we just put a deposit down on a rental house there.
I'm originally from Florida; been in Yankton for a couple years now but I still was in shock at finding a 3 bedroom home just 1 mile from my job, for just $375 a month. In Florida this house wouldn't have rented for any less than $1100 a month.
Granted, I haven't spent a whole heck of a lot of time in Scotland except to work. But I have asked a lot of questions of the residents especially now that I will be living there. My basic impression is that Scotland has enough services to fulfill your basic, day-to-day needs....and for whatever they don't offer, Yankton is about a 35 minute drive away. Mitchell is about 45 minutes away & they seem to have a few more dining/entertainment options since they're on the interstate. There is a small grocery store that pretty much offers everything you need unless you're into cooking exotic/specialty meals. There is a meat locker (butcher) both in Scotland and in the nearby town of Kaylor; you can buy meat in bulk & they do custom processing. There is a clothing store with men's, women's & childrens clothing. There is a hardware store that has all the basics. There is a dentist, chiropractor and a small hospital/medical complex. There's a veterinarian. There are a couple hair salons. A flower shop. A bank. Several insurance offices. Two or three bars, I think (I don't really do the bar thing so haven't paid attention.) Two or three gas stations, plus the farmer's co-op sells gas & diesel. 4 or 5 churches I believe. A school.
As far as employment in Scotland; I'd imagine if you're in the medical field you can find work there. There is a Schwans warehouse (frozen food home delivery people) and an ethanol plant with trucks coming & going all the time. There is also a cement plant. I would imagine if you have a CDL or have warehouse/forklift/general labor experience there would be available jobs. Of course if you have experience or want to work in agriculture, there's nothing but farm country all around Scotland.
People seem to be rather nice, everyone waves at other motorists as you pass one another. As with any small town, people are kind of "nosy" and everybody knows everybody else. But I guess that comes with the territory. Good luck
