The Death Penalty
I'm sure you all know about the lady who was deaf that murdered her also deaf "friend". Last night I was watching the National News (WOOO-HOOO, So. Dak. hit the national news, but only when it's bad stuff. ) and they are now hoping that she'll be able to avoid the death penalty because she's deaf. Even people who have this handicap are appalled because they're afraid it will go back to the classification of "deaf and dumb" like it was in the past. They said that everything doesn't properly translate from language to sign language so she wouldn't have the full capabilities of defending herself.
I'm sure you remember that she murdered her friend and cut her in peices and scattered her between two states. I am not necessarily FOR the death penalty, but does anyone feel it's fair to give this gal a break only on the basis that she's deaf?

I'm against the death penalty so i hope it works out for her.
Do i really think that being deaf means you are incapable of properly defending yourself legally? Hell no!
If i was deaf and on death row, would i tell my lawyers to try anything possible to save my life? You bet!

I don't care if she is deaf. She did the crime and understood what it was then. She can serve her time on death row and take her turn.
Life sentence is good enough? I don't think so. It costs tax payers approximately $60k per year to keep somebody in jail. And that's if they are in perfect health. If they visit the doctor a couple times or maybe even have a stroke or heart attack, they we get to pay more.

I love everyone's opinion about this. I'm not really fond of the death penalty, but ONLY because there have been innocent people put to death and innocent people put in prison. It sometimes takes years and new DNA tests to prove that someone was wrongly accused. But the thing that bothers me about this is how brutal she was. It was a sort of crime of passion because they were gay and the one gal was jealous so she just killed her ex lover. It took a lot of thought and time to cut her body up and dispose of it. I surely wouldn't want to be a cellmate of hers knowing what she's capable of or wouldn't even want to be out in the compound or at meals with her. I just think it will leave the door wide open if she wins her battle of no death penalty.

Bureaucracies are fallible and for that reason alone shouldn't be in the business of ending life.

i believe you have this wrong...she killed a heterosexual deaf woman because she was a FRIEND of her lesbian lover's...guess she thought that she was interferring with their relationship(my guess is advising her to leave an abusive relationship...this woman is NOT small and looks completely nasty...)... there ARE CERTAIN CRIMES that the death penalty IS THE ANSWER and i think THIS IS ONE OF THEM...the SICK fact that she dismembered and scattered the remains, makes me wonder, IF IT WAS THE FIRST TIME SHE'S DONE IT? it has been said that "she is highly intellegent." i live in mitchell but if i was in sf, i would have no problem being on a death penalty jury, in such a case...although the prosecutor may have a problem since she is FEMALE...

I am not opposed to the death penalty in specific situations - I do oppose paying to house criminals for life when the death penalty may be a propper judgement. After working the legal system for many years, yes the courts do make many mistakes, (which we all hear about) but at the same time, many criminals are given endless appeals and their sentence is put off for decades. I won't go into my views on sex offenders (of course not the death penaty, but I have strong views on how they should be "rehabilitated" after working with them for years).
