Yes I have been. I was a little let down because I was only able view from a distance. Some building where all go to view from the balcony and yes there where little telescope machines to view through if one wanted but could be seen without. Flagstaff, AZ I think is pretty similar except for elevation AZ is much higher. I have been to both places both very pretty. I went to the famous Sturgis during the big event which was fun.
SD has more grass and mosquitos.

Not true, I don't live there but did. I live north again much further north than SD and enjoy but getting use to the cold again. I live in forest country and resort area which has much to offer all year around.
It's a long road trip from AZ which I've made several times coming back to SD. They will come either way simply because many native AZ haven't seen the miles of open grass and farm lands that go on and on and on.
AZ can't compare to the SD summer nights when the cool breeze blows and the crickets and grasshoppers sing. The thunder storms that roll in to relieve us from the hot humid summer days. Sit on the porch in the evening to enjoy the peace and quiet, visit and build a bonfire.

I'm trying to save them the 2-4 day road trip. Rapid is a a beautiful area but it just doesn't compare to the amazing views of AZ (canyons, mountians, clear waters, waterfalls, hundreds of hiking trails, etc.)
Not to worry I don't live in SD but if I chose to move back or recommend a place to move to in SD it would be Rapid City only because it has much more to offer as far as outdoor activities which would be of great interest for those into outdoors.

Uhh, there's many symbols/icons for freedom, liberty, and justice. I didn't single out Mount Rushmore.
Fort Randall Dam was not said as a "must see". It was on a list of possible attractions for the poster.

But why in the world would they want to see all that when they have all the "majestic" sights of Arizona?

Ditto to what Debey said. You'll also enjoy the friendly people in our state. Keep in mind that not everyone offering advice actually lives here so take it with a grain of salt.
Once you get the vacation guide, you'll have a much better idea of the things you'll be interested in seeing. I hope you have a wonderful vacation and please let us know your likes and dislikes after your trip. I love trip reports.
