That is less people than my high school, which had 480-490 students at the time when I was a student (my class was the largest class in school history with 123 students) and will be the largest one for awhile unless if the area gets an influx of residents wanting peace and quiet with a decent 20 minute drive to Sioux Falls. My school was the one who ended splitting into two districts and was rather nasty battle within the district during my later high school days.

We turn our heat down as low as we can stand it with the kids

Energy saving bulbs and appliances

I need to bring more leftovers for work lunch (that's my goal)

If there are items I need at the grocery store on sale I try to stock up (and at sams) especially at family thrift if they have the gas savings!

We just sold our house in Denver this past weekend so that is a HUGE thing for us - no more double mortgage payments and double utility bills, HOA fees OH YEAH! We did have to take a pretty penny to close since we took a huge hit, but well worth it to be done with it after almost three years!

Congratulations Busy! I knew you've been trying to sell for a long time now. Your place was in Stapleton right? I wonder how all the development there is doing nowadays.

Congratulations, Busy! I didn't realize that it hadn't sold until now. That leaves you a lot more breathing room.

Huron's first signs came today as 80 people are being temporarily laid off from the turkey processing plant here. Kind of odd, as 2008 was it's first profitable year if I remember correctly.

Really? That surprises me cause you'd think the food industry would be one of the safest to be in. We all still eat even in a recession.

Were the people who were laid off locals? I know they had a bit of a problem with illegals working there.

That is suprising - I work for an employment services agency in Minneapolis and we've been relying more heavily on partnerships with the meatpacking/ processing plants throughout the state to send people to for jobs as they are some of the few employers still hiring entry-level positions these days, and people are a lot less hesitant to work at them if it means a job and benefits (although they too have dramatically reduced a lot of their hiring trends).

Not sure, it was just in the paper today. I will say that the majority of the workers there were immigrants, so they probably took the brunt of it.

Just my opinion, but if they weren't turning a profit when the economy was good or barely turning one, it is that much harder now.

Near Huron is a Jack Links beef jerky plant that my business deals with. They haven't had layoffs, but they were down for two weeks over Christmas, and you can 'feel' that things are slowing down for them too.

OK, I think I just recently read that a Huron plant was heavily fined for hiring illegals. I don't remember the whole story, but is this the plant that had the lay-offs? The paper mentioned a huge fine and charges filed, etc. Are we talking about the same place?
