Snow and cold are one thing...flooding is quite another...but to get it all at once is too much!! Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are in harm's way.

G33kgirl, do you live in any of the evacuation zones? Luckily you won't have to worry about flooding in Rapid City. The last flood we had was in 1972 when a dam burst upstream. Now the floodplain is all parks and bike trails.

Thankfully we live in the small central area of Fargo that is not in an evacuation area. However we have friends that have had to evac and one friends parents house that burnt down because fire trucks couldn't get to it. This flood will definitely be something I will never forget. We should be safe here where we live, unless something terrible happens (knock on wood) and they have the evac the whole city. It's the unknown that is the hardest. The kids were out of school almost all week and they will be out of school all week next week. It's just insane up here! And then the snow and cold weather on top.. ugh. Hubbys been super busy as Tractor Supply has been open extra hours and getting lots of emergency shipments. They actually put him up in a hotel tonight near his store so he can get a shipment late tonight!
Anyways.. I am just so excited only about 3 more weeks until we get to come down there.. hopefully it will be spring there by then!

So back when the world was normal, and the seasons stayed true to form, when does winter usually end in SD? Near eighty degrees day, then snowing thunderstorms, while fun to read about on a forum, can't be half as amusing live.
When does winter start and end across I90? Are you looking at snow in October and in late April?
Anyone know, first hand, if the humidity is comparable to either New England or Florida?

Winter's end is anyone's guess up here. Of course, Western SD is more dry and arid than Eastern SD but we also get those crazy temperature swings. Last year it snowed hard on May 5th but then it was green green green all sumer long and we had finally come out of a decade-long drought. Other years, it quits snowing mid-March. The first snow usually comes about mid-October but this year it was late. I think the first snow was in November.
Humidity is NOTHING like it is in Florida. Eastern SD is humid but hardly comparable to Florida. Western SD has very low humidity because it is higher in elevation and gets more sunshine. I'd compare Eastern SD to New England and Western SD to Colorado or Utah.

I've lived here 5 years now, and can remember snow in May at least 3 of the 5. Not just last year.
We don't really have "spring" here, we skip from winter to summer (western SD) June is usually really mild western state. Like 60 degree temps during the day, 40's at night. Which makes swimming at the outdoor pools kind of chilly!

I can handle New England humidity. Even the crazy temperature swings. I lived in southern Vermont and that adjacent corner in western mass and that was home to fluctuating temperatures and weather patterns a lot.
Autumn was generally the same and my favorite time of year. I don't get that in Florida, or even in San Diego when I lived there. While that weather is practically zero humidity, the monotony of it got to me.

I can do with out Spring . The fall is my favorite season. Jeans and sweatshirt weather, or long sleeves.
I was looking more at Eastern SD, only because of the airport in SF. What's the closest play to fly out of from Rapid City area? Still SF?
I read on hear winds almost a constant. I'm looking for a flat, wide open, space, I take it Southeastern SD fits the bill?

Yes, if you're looking for a flatter area, it's eastern South Dakota although we do have some hilly areas. What we call the "Black Hills"~they're actually mountains with beautiful Black Hills Spruce scattered across the area. I think it's beautiful out there.
If you ever read Laura Ingalls Wilder's books when you were little~several of them were written about her time in eastern South Dakota. She lived in DeSmet. Our area used to be "the prairie".
Like Danny and Ashnat said, we get more humidity in eastern South Dakota, BUT it's absolutely nothing like the humidity in Fla. I love the humidity down there, but it could get old in time. BUT we can get some very hot days during the summertime. The record high for Mitchell is 116. But we rarely have 100 plus days throughout the summer. We stay warmer at night during the summertime then western So. Dak., but their winters are milder. They generally beat us with snowfalls, but it melts out there because they often have warmer days then we do over here.
It just all boils down to your own preference. Actually, I would probably choose the Hills area except I was born over here and just never moved. But you do have the option of moving to the eastern part of the state and taking a weekend trip out west to see which you prefer.
Sioux Falls Airport and Rapid City Airport would be your best options. Just a guess~it would probably be cheaper to fly into Sx. Falls. Also, check out Allegiant Air between Sanford and Sx. Falls. Not sure, but it may fly out of Rapid City, too.

Rapid City Regional Airport flies to Denver, SLC, Phoenix, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Twin Cities.
All of South Dakota is flat and wide-open with exception to the mountains of the Black Hills.

Danny, do you have Allegiant Air flights from RC to Sanford, Fl? Or do you have AA over there at all?
