Crazy Horse Monument
Hello All,
I was in the area of Rapid City and the Black Hills back in September of 1992. Yes, I know....ages ago. At that time the Crazy Horse Monument was in the works with the "chalk outline" of how the face of the horse and the body would be. A friend of mine shared photos of the monument that she received from her friend last year and it still looks the same. I was wondering what is the progress of this to date. Is it anywhere near completion? Has it been stalled? What is the story with it. As always, thanks to all who reply.

The monument has been in the works even when my parents were growing up back in the 1960s/1970s. It seems like it is going slower, but the ones in charge (to my understanding) did not want government funding. It will get done eventually but many be awhile.

Since 1992 they have just worked mainly on the face of Crazy Horse. The face is pretty much done now and they seem to be blasting off layers on the side that would have the profile of the horse. In actuality, they have made quite a bit of progress. My parents talked about going up back in the 1970s and the only thing up there was a hole through a mountain.
This picture shows how layers are being removed for the horse face. Keep in mind that it's also taking place on the other side of the mountain too.

I doubt I'll ever see it finished in my lifetime.

Thank you for the replies guys. So sorry this is taking so long. Also, I had no idea this was in the works for as long as it has been.

It is neat how the entire project is funded by private donations though. If it was federally funded it would lose a lot of its purpose.
