sager9800 is on a distinguished road
thanks for all your helpful replies. I still would feel more comfortable if i had the traction control/vehicle stability control for wet/snowy/icy days when I'm turning a corner.

Unfortunately, my line of work has me working regardless of the weather. But i'll be living close to my job, so i won't have to venture into the countryside without good reason.

A prius is less likely since it is "smallish" and I need a decent sized car to help me move. Subarus are well-known for its AWD, but the decreased mileage is something i don't want to compromise for the other 350 days of the year.

A Subaru is a very good choice. They are very popular in Rapid City too.

I am able to get along quite well with two wheeled drive pickups. Even moved snow with some. A front wheeled drive car will do just fine. Make sure you have good tires.

Now I do have a 4x4 pickup. but it has to get really bad before I drag Sherman out.

As far as hybrids I am not impressed with them. For economy and maintenance I would get a VW diesel. They would blow prius' out of the water.
