Good Mountain Town ?
We are thinking of moving to South Dakota and I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on where to look for homes that would be more nestled in the mountains. We have a 9 yr old so a good school district is a plus. Thank you.

Lead/Deadwood is definitely nestled in the mountains. Its a cute little town - I've only been there in tourist capacity, but I've heard all good things in general about it from the people who've lived here a lot longer than I have. Hill City is another one, I think there is a post in here that said they have a pretty good school district.
What size of town are you looking for? Those two are decent sized - I'm sure there are lots more, but I think some of the other ones I know of are really REALLY small, even by South Dakota standards!

Lucinda, I can't help out much as I live on the other side of the state. I think you will find South Dakota welcoming, and the school districts here are top notch... In my opinion!

Pretty much any town in the Black Hills. My favorite is Spearfish and even though it's not in the mountains it is in the foothills and only 10 minutes away from great skiing and mountain recreation. It's by far the prettiest city in the Black Hills too. I'd say look at Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, Hill City, and Custer.

I have lived in the Black Hills nearly my entire life. It is fairly diverse, and average climate can vary within a few miles due to elevation changes. Job diversity varies from town to town as well as the available outdoor activities.
It is difficult for me to even touch the surface of all the great things here. I currently live in Lead where I sell real estate and my wife is a cosmetologist . We have 2 kids in school here and I can't think of anything that would drag me away from this beautiful place. Feel free to direct message me if you want more info on the region.

Personally if I could I would live in Custer or Hill City area of I could pick anywhere. Well if I could pick I would like the Rochford area... its pretty remote and that would be ducky with me.

I think you may really like Rimrock (Johnson Siding) or Hisega. They're both really neat little towns nestled way up along Highway 44 and it's about a 15 minute drive into Rapid City. Waterfalls, meadows, mountains, windy roads, and huge cliffs are all along that area too. It's very scenic.

Thank you for all the suggestions and I do welcome any more. I just wanted to add that employment is not an issue because my husband is self-employed. We actually have visited SD two time but it has been over ten years since we have been there last. And as I mentioned, a good school is very important. Thanks Again!

I agree with the Rimrock or Hisega areas - very nice! I would personally love to live in the apple springs / Boulder Canyon area if I could afford it and didn't have to drive to work daily - Nemo Road area is also nice

My sister lives along HWY 44 (rimrock hisega) and loves it. There is a decent amount of housing along there as well.
Boulder Canyon between Sturgis and Deadwood is one of my favorite areas. Great 4x4 trails beautiful golf course, and there are many roads that take you a few miles off of the highway into some huge areas of forest service, and there are some gorgeous subdivisions in the woods along there. If you like winter sports it is one of the closer areas to the ski resorts (10-15 miles) while still getting half of the snow.
