I was a manager for Costco for 9 years and still have pretty good connections with the midwest management team. They had been looking at SF for a while, Omaha had to go first. With the economy they have changed their tact and put many domestic projects on hold, like SF, they are pushing markets outside the US like Australia. While they have been one of the companies that has done fine in this economy, they like to conserive their resources in order to give their members the best price on the best product. They will come to SF, just not as soon as they have planned, plus they really like to kick Sam's in the rear, especially in Sam's own back yard.

I think that both Sam's and Costco each have their strenths and good things to offer. I have never set foot into a Costco but have heard people rant and rave about it and have a friend who speaks highly of it. I have been into Sam's a few times, but it has been several years back and it has some good buys. I like the cream puffs and the sandwich meat there. A good chunk of the HS graduation food came from Sam's and was very good. Sam's does pretty well with catering to small businesses. My relatives run a convenience store and have bought some of their supplies at Sam's.
I think that Costco will do fine in Sioux Falls but it should be in the eastern part of the city in my opinion and complement the Target and Kohl's and other businesses that are up or will come up.

I emailed Costco and told them of my interest in having a Costco open here, we need one to compete with horrible Wal-Mart. If anyone else in interested in telling them that you would like one too, here is the address:

I have a friend in the Pacific Northwest who has good things to say about Costco. I normally do my food shopping at Hy-Vee and Sunshine and have been in the habit of doing so for quite some time. Another option or choice would be good, although a few more rooftops on the east side of the city would make the feasibility of a Costco and other retailers and eating establishments more relaistic.
