yikes you make it sound bad as far as the jobs go. A friend of mine says i should be able to find work within a week. I have manufacturing experience i also have a class b cdl which i am hoping to be able to find work with. Is it reasonable to drive back and forth to SF as far as work goes?

My aunt made a decent wage running fork lift in shipping at 3M - raised 5 kids as a single Mom in Brookings. I think there is plenty to do especially with the arts on campus. The museum has a nice rotation of art plus the student shows, and the theater department as well. Movie theater, a few decent restaurants, 15-20 minutes to Flandreau to play black jack, lakes all over for fishing, canoeing, water skiing, lots of pheasant hunting, there is a a great park in town that has a great summer arts and crafts festival. If a person doesn't have a few hobbies I suppose it could get a little boring, but if a person is willing to go with what that area has to offer I think there is plenty to do and see. There are a few decent little towns mid-way of Sioux Falls and Brookings that would put one only 10-40 minutes to either, and they tend to be a little more affordable. The Farmers markets around there are awesome in the summer.

I spent a day in Brookings. Went there to check it out, since it was listed in a journal as in the top 5 best places to live. Maybe expectations were too high. I wasn't impressed. LIke all the trees though, I'm sure summers get hot.I was there late September. It was Sunday so the ice cream shop at SDSU was closed. I was bummed. I heard they evented cookies and cream. On the same trip I visited Owatonna, MN which was listed as #1 on that best city list. What a joke. Those lists are to be taken with a grain of salt.

Thank you for pointing out of obvious. Here is a novel idea... Pick a place to live that you like. I know I don't need an article to tell me what locale is my ideal place to reside.

You ever notice that those "Best Places to Live" lists are always cities with factory outlets??? Owatonna, MN; Loveland, CO; Camarillo, CA; etc...

Weird huh?

Also when the list writer compiles this who knows what they smoke or what they use for criteria they use.

The lists are very subjective and one needs to look at the facts (such as crime states, employment opportunities, climate, etc.) before making a judgment. Also go with what feels right and correlates well with one's interests. What may work for one person may not work for another.

As a student if you are looking for cheaper places to rent, it's pretty hard to find. We rent from Voss Rentals (Don't recommend it). It's about $400 a piece with rent, cable, utilities, etc. and we barely have the heat on and we rarely have the lights on. If you are renting go with Moriarty Rentals.

Brookings is a clean town, people are very friendly. I live in a college street, but across the street are families with kids and all have treated us college kids like their own. As for work, it's easier to find in the summer time when we are all gone.
