Sorry, but no South Dakota steak can compare to the cornfed beef of Nebraska! Mmmm...
Danny--cornfed beef is not good for ya. Try some grass fed SD bison or beefer. But you're right. The two bovine diets, corn vs grass, make the meat taste like it came from two different species. American taste buds appreciate the majority raised corn taste. But that will change as health conscience consumers demand change.
The airbase was part of the early warning radar system to monitor aircraft attempting to bomb the USA from Russia through Canada. We had approx 120 guys there from all across the US. Radar Tech, scope dopes, radiomen, radar repairmen, had about 4 to 5 people from Gettysburg working there as well.
I really enjoyed my time there, played on both the baseball and basketball teams where we traveled playing all the small towns around there. Most of us were in the 18 to 25 year old age bracket and had a great rapport with the local boys & girls in town. I was lucky to have made lifelong friends with some terrific families, namely Louie & Phyllis Wise, Harold & Eileen Hegerle, the Gross family & many more. I had the pleasure of returning to Gettysburg while on the way to Yellowstone, in 1978 and visited the remains of the base to show my young kids where I had been. I returned in 2005 with my wife & attended the 50th re-union of the site. There is another one being planned in 2010 and If possible we will be back.It will always be a special part of my life, and I will never forget the opportunity.
I just read the story in the paper about the guy that allegedly hired someone to burn down his grocery store. That is a twisted tale.

Not an indictment of Gettysburg itself, because as I said I like the town in general, but still.
Hey Debey! How many east river started out lives as west river calves? End up being fattened up and brought to market east river. So all the hard work was done west of the Big Muddy right?

As long as they're corn fed, we'll call a truce, RJ! East River marketing is going to change, with Sioux Falls Stockyard, not handling cattle, anymore......
Those West River cows we bought, last time, have fencing "issues".........
They don't stay in.....tend to wander........ so I say they are MORE work.....and provided my grandson, with an opertunity, to learn new words, when he got to "help" me, fix fence.....(again!)
on a side note:
hubby's employeers are working cows & calves & hauling to pastures, this week. got some feisty calves, this year! Hubby's got some "nice" bruises, & a limp, to prove it!
