Default Grad student moving to Vermillion

Hi All - I'll be moving to Vermillion in the fall. What can you tell me about the area? Where are the best areas to look for apartments. The USD apartment locator is limited. Will be visiting soon and would like to have the better locations available to search and find in a limited time. Please give as much info as you can!

Start looking for rentals now. If you wait until fall you might have to settle for what's left. Vermillion is hurting for off campus housing space, especially after the big trailer park between the main campus and the dome was sold.

It will be worth it to pay rent for an extra month to get a nice apt. or house.

There are rental houses all over town as well as apartments. There are several decent apartment units within a block of the main campus.

Just curious, what will you be getting your masters in? My son just started grad school there this summer.

Thanks for the info. I'll make a decision soon. I'm going for my Au.D. It's a 4 year program, so Vermillion will be home for a while. I've heard good things about the city and the state. I'm looking forward to my visit. What field is your son in?

I believe it's called something like, Information Technology for Education.
Basically, it's developing expertise in using all forms of technology in the classroom as well as being able to work as an IT person for a school district. This is the extent of my understanding of it.

I read somewhere that there are supposed to be some new apartment style dorms that will be built (Coyote Village?). Finding a rental in Vermillion can be tricky. I went with three other friends and managed to find something decent a few years back.

Overall, Vermillion is a good community. It has the basics and is a walkable city. The city has a quaint small town college feel but is within a half hour from Sioux City and fifty minutes from Sioux Falls for additional shopping and amentities, much better distance than most areas of in South Dakota.
