Cutting Edge Science in South Dakota
Work begins on world's deepest underground lab - Yahoo! News
Looks like some pretty cool research planned for deep underneath South Dakota. This looks more and more like my kind of place.

It sounds awesome!
News, Weather and Sports for Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa
On a side note, is this connected? From this article, I'm thinking its something different. Maybe some of the Black Hills forums members can answer this...

The way I understand it, this will finally definitively answer the question as to how far down a hole you can yell and still hear your echo.

Neutrinos have massive amounts of energy - that is one of the things they will be studying. There will also be a learning center at the surface for schools and scientists and general public to visit. There is already a "waiting list" with applicants from across the world trying to get in line for their research to be done. There are huge mining tunnels that exist all under Lead that are the remnants from our mining past. The caverns are like giant wells that seep thousands of gallons of water per day that have to be pumped out of the lower sections of the mine before the development can continue. I believe they are set for the national lab to begin construction around (approx 8000 ft under) 2011 while the state lab is being prepared as we speak (approx 5000 ft deep). We have visitors and workers from major colleges buzzing around here on a regular basis.
It will also be indirectly related to some of the research being done at this European lab - CERN

Sorry for such a long post it's just exciting for me as it is just a few minutes walk from my home.

Also, children all over the US will finally have the answer to the age old question of "if I keep digging will I get to China?".
But in all seriousness this is huge, being connected with the research at CERN is awesome. Now I'm going to go and read all about dark matter on wikipedia (yes, I'm a science geek...).

I am a science geek too... Well, somewhat... haha
It's so intriguing though... Astronomy really gets me.... which also clashes into the paranormal.

Ha! Don't fall for this one folks. We had the same thing that was suppose to happen around here but it turned out that the soil was wrong and they couldn't support the shaft due to the lack of cohesion present in the substrate. I did however talk to one of the "construction" guys and when his back was turned took some documents out of his government looking vehicle. Dark Matter, Shmark Matter! They're trying to make contact with a race of mole people down there with the idea of enslaving them and stealing their geothermal energy source. He had pictures too!
