congregating snakes
Anacondas are everywhere
Possibly water? In the area or under the building (even if not visible to you) or both.
One of the territory maps showed the western part of the state from the Missouri river west as the location of a particular snake.
I think that's probably because of the streams flowing from the Black hills area down to the Missouri with most of the population probably lies near the water - my guess is that it's 'probably not an even distribution throughout the entire area.
Pretty helpful critters, even though few probably have a true love of them, they're our friends ... or maybe more like !!!!

Thanks for all the great replies. The hard part as I said will be to convince my wife that there is as much chance of seeing a snake in our house or yard as there was of seeing one in our house in Rochester (which was never). She still thinks that our 3 little kids are going to be swallowed up by snakes and that they won't be able to play in the back yard.
Movers are here packing up my stuff for the big move! can't wait to get there now

No, you won't have a problem to that extent. You might see an occasional one, but they go away, and to have one in a house is extremely rare.
Heck, look at me...I'm scared to death of any snake (can't help it), and I'm fine here. I'll bet I haven't even seen one in ten years. Of course I'm not looking for them.

Just curious, where did your wife get the idea that SD is full of snakes?

My in-laws who were stationed in Rapid City with the Air Force more than 30 yrs back. My mother-in-law tends to exagerate everything so suddenly SD became full of snakes

In years of playing on the water I have not seen any "water snakes" again the only poisonous snake is the prairie rattler.

South Dakota Snakes
This may have been posted earlier, but this a rundown of the snake species in SD.
I've lived in Sioux Falls for about 5 years... I haven't seen a snake yet. They are more common in western South Dakota.

We lived at the base around the same time, and we had houses in several areas, on base and off. The only snakes we saw for the most part were harmless. It definitely was not an infestation at any level.

There are some homes that snakes do seem to congregate. I own five properties in Sioux Falls and there is one where for some reason, the snakes have chosen to surround it. Like the PP said, most snakes around the Sioux Falls area are garter snakes and they're harmless.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and assume that you have a patio or that the house is on a slab...do the snakes seem to be more populous in the spring or late fall? Do you have a lot of high grass in the area, or paving stones?
