Yes I did catch that Journeyman status on there..hmm
We pay $8.50 for small squares of coastal here and $11.50 for smaller alfalfa bales. They have rolls here that are $60 for coastal.
Nice to know there are arabian folks out there, here in Texas they thing Arab horses are the scum of the earth! Easy trail rides are great for me! I am at that age now that I am slowing down with horses, not so rubbery anymore and it hurts when I hit the ground! LOL
Blizzard sounds crazy! I do not mind extreme weather as long as I have a nice place too be. Though I do not much care for tornados! Earthquakes in CA and Monsoons in AZ, severe T-storms here. It's ok as long as it doesn't last half the year!

Today for instance here the humidity is almost unbearable, step outside and your glasses fog up from the humidity! NASTY here today..how are you guys out there??

We are going through a monsoon season in much of SD. Rainiest summer I've seen in a long time. No complaints here though. It sure beats drought conditions that only a couple years ago much of SD was under. We got 2.5" to 3.0" in some areas around Sioux Falls last night. The lakes as well as the Missouri River are all full statewide. Cool!!

Weather today is real pleasant. Cloudy with a cool breeze in the low 80's. Bet you wish you were here?

Hi Sage - I know this is a SD post (and believe me, the topic I'd rather stay on mostly). Saw your post on the monsoons in AZ (which is where we are now). Where in AZ did you live? As you can see from my original screen name (lol) - we are in Tucson (can't wait to take our trip and settle on a city in SD).

To anyone - since the topic went to snow I was wondering what the difference is between Rapid City and Sioux Falls with average (know this will be ballpark) amount of snow per winter. Thanks.

Jammie - thanks again - and yes, I do feel welcome - can't wait !!

BusySocialWorker - was wondering if you knew the status of hiring for Regional Medical Center. I am an RN. Sorry for trying to grab your opinion on this here, but I wasn't able to catch you on another thread. Even a short sentence or two would help. Thanks so much.

Talking Winter travels

I was told the BH area RC had milder winters...
I have to give you another "it depends". It depends on the specific location you choose. If you locate in or near a metropolitan area such as Rapid or Sioux Falls or any number of others, municipal services should keep the roads open, even under adverse conditions. However, if you are leaning towards a little ranchette that is large enough to grow feed for 2 or 3 horses, you may find yourself in a more rural setting than you might want. For instance if you are on a township road, which leads to a county road, which leads to a state highway, which leads to the interstate, which you take to work, the interstate and the state highway should not pose a problem. The county highway could take a day or so to be opened up and the township road could take longer. Your driveway, of course, is up to you to keep open. The winters are just another consideration in picking a location. I am sure you can find something that will suit your needs. As someone else posted, missing work for a week or more would be rather rare. But, if you are in a rural area, you could miss a couple of days.

uh

Last winter I think the longest I-90 was closed was 48 hours. Most roads do not stay closed for long.

Now there are some scenic highways and roads that do not receive any wintertime maintenance, but there are few dwellings and not an issue.

nocatee, it might be an inconvenient truth, but east river gets socked with winter weather in spades too. And what is the wage differential between east river and west river? Oh and lest also figure cost of living in the conclusion. November 2005 big section of east river had a nasty bad ice storm, power was out of an extended period of time.

Northern hills gets the bigger portion of the snow.

One final thought, the snows of last winter are not an every winter phenomenon.

Summertime weather in the hills - can get up in the 90's during the day - almost NO humidity (I am *SO* loving that!) - still heads back down to the 60's and 50's (sometimes upper 40's) at night. We have been running the AC about an hour around dinner time because the gas stove heats up the first floor. About 2-3 times a week, we have been getting a gully washer in the evening. Sometimes, it's just dry t-storms. Today, it's about 70, and later this evening we are expecting a pounding - possible large hail, high winds, tornados...then it's supposed to calm down for the rest of the week!

JMGG- you have NO idea how much I wish I was there!!

BSW- your hubby sounds like he landed a decent job! Does Rapid City have jobs that stay open late? We do not like to put our daughter in daycare, so we like hubby to work FT during day and I take a PT at night. Is there places like Tractor Supply there? Cabelas? Lots of western stores/Tack and such?
What about stuff to do in general, family style. Parks,fishing....What is you local newspaper called?

AJTUSCON- Hey, been to Tuscon for a Renn Faire, was HOT but FUN. We lived in Gisela, at the bottom of the hill from Payson, about 45 miles NW of Phoenix. Worked in Payson.

Hi there Right now the Regional is hiring - we are comming off a paid time off freeze - and I think financially things are looking up - We did take a 3% pay cut, but it prevented layoffs. Regional Hospital also owns many of the clinics around town and they are also hiring RN's at this time - The entire system is collectively known as Regional Health which includes the hospital, clinics and other community care centers around the hills.

We are so very happy to have our Paid time off back an accuring so that has been a big morale boost around here! I also recently heard our insurance in all changing, so we will have to wait and see what that brings....

If you have other questions about Regional let me know!

Our news paper is The Rapid City Journal

Rapid City Journal | Front |

We do have a Cabelas and brand new tractor supply that will open soon! Also a Runnings and several other western / tack type businesses.

There are a LOT of family things to do - remember Rapid is a huge tourist destination, so it is easy to play tourist here and do activities - some are kind of spendy - others are free.
