Hot Springs a good place to retire?
We're looking at moving down to America and my wife suggested Hot Springs. Anybody have some general information? Anything quirky about the area? Anyone know anything about the local airport? We have an airplane and I'd like to get a hangar for it. Thanks.

Hot Springs is a very beautiful area of the Black Hills. In general, the Black Hills is a very popular retirement destination because it's quiet, scenic, and yet you still get all the conveniences of towns. Hot Springs does have an airport too.

Quirky, eh? Well the Mammoth Site is an active archaeological dig where a large group of fossilized mammoths have been found. Then Evans Plunge is a natrally heated pool (hence Hot Springs). Angostora Reservoir is a quick 10 minute drive away too. It's a nice area.

Hot Springs is a great place to retire. The climate is drier than you might expect and since it is located near the south end of the banana belt which runs along the east side of the hills, the climate is a lot milder than you may expect. The snow doesn't stay around long enough for sking or snowmobiling, but if you are into that sort of thing, Custer is just a few miles north with the winter sports. I am not sure what you are interested in, but there is plenty of room to fly.

Hot springs has a pretty nice General Aviation community. I think there is a flying club or two. Also Spearfish has a really nice airport and flying club.

I'm looking to stay a good ways from the interstate, so Spearfish is out. I've been 20 miles away from the interstate and could still hear the road noise. I see a bunch of home-builts registered to Hot Springs residents, which means a lot of pilots I can turn to for advice. I've actually considered building my own airplane and it will be much easier to do when I'm retired. I also noticed a lot of the home-builts are Vans, which puts out some great kits that I will certainly consider.

Erik, you'll really like Hot Springs because it is close to Highway 79 (Heartland Expressway) but you still have to go through a canyon and a windy road to get to it. It's probably 5 miles away.
I wouldn't rule out Spearfish. Sure the Interstate goes through it, but keep in mind that this is SOUTH DAKOTA... not much traffic. I've spent a lot of time in Spearfish and I've never heard any noise. My grandma lived about a mile from I-90 in Rapid City and I never heard it there either.
Both Hot Springs and Spearfish are GORGEOUS and really neat towns. I'd say that Spearfish offers more with the whole college-town vibe and liberal atmosphere, but Hot Springs has a MUCH better climate! Funny how it's so different and they're so close!

Then Spearfish is definitely out! I'm looking to retire, so college is many years in the past for me. Besides, me and liberals don't see eye to eye on most subjects. And the wife wants the milder climate.

There is an EEA chapter in Spearfish.
What sort of kit are you wanting to build?

Vans has some excellent kits. Their RV 10 looks to be just what I need.
