Spearfish is a very nice town. It's beautiful and Spearfish Canyon is one of my favorite places.
You can use the site above to browse the different towns. Many of them have pictures so you can get a bit of an idea if it looks like something you're searching for.

Spearfish is nice - enough businesses to cover the basics, close enough to Rapid for what you can't get locally. Beautiful scenery, lots to see and do, good schools, good home prices. Rent can be a bit steep, but there are affordable places if you look. Not sure about taxes, as I don't own a home in this area. I would definitely recommend it, though!

I can't think of a not-nice town in that range... Belle Fourche, Huron, Mitchell (over 15,000), Yankton, Vermillion. Chamberlain is another nice town/area. They aren't quite up to 5,000 though.

The tenth largest city in South Dakota is less than 10,000 -- Vermilion.
here's the census data: The US50 - Cities and Towns in South Dakota State

Vermillion's population is kind of deceptive. The University of South Dakota has close to 9,000 students on campus. The towns population even now won't be much more than 10,000. Students living on campus are not counted in the census. Off campus students I believe are. If you deduct the off campus student population, my guess is that the remaining population in Vermillion would be no more than 5,000.

My vote is for Spearfish. You are up in the hills and not far from Rapid City. If I were to move to a small town in South Dakota Spearfish would be it.
