Default Quick Trip to RC

Will be taking a quick trip to Rapid City soon. I'd like to check out the downtown area on a Sat. afternoon or early evening just to get a feel of what it's like - the shops and the type of people around. Downtown areas tend not to be the best areas of a city. Where would I park and what streets would I walk? Would I be safe? Is downtown "open" Sundays? I have the city map pretty well memorized and know where to go to check out various apt. complexes and the different areas of the city. Am looking forward to seeing Rapid as the last time I was there was a few weeks after the big flood!!!

Saturday afternoon should be good. Safety is not a big concern, nothing beyond common sense. Most businesses will be open, parking might be pest.

Fox, are you talking about the flood of '72??? If so, I remember that well. DH was out there cause he was in the guards and I was there about a week after the flood.

I'll leave the answers to one of the RC locals, but you don't have to fear for your safety.

Safety downtown will probably not be a problem. Businesses are open Saturdays and the streets are somewhat busy even though it's no longer tourist season. Just lock your doors and hide valuables like you would most anywhere else you park. I recommend the Firehouse for lunch and Delmonico Grill for dinner. Which apts do you have in mind?

Jammie - Yes, that was the flood in June, 1972. I was on a trip late in June and stayed at a KOA campground in the RC area. I remember driving out from the city along a highway with motels on my right and Rapid Creek was on my left. You could see the waterline that swept away homes on the hill across the creek. it was somewhat eerie!

Thanks to the rest of you for the downtown info. We'll consider eating there sometime Saturday. We're just going to check out some areas that Danny recommended in previous posts. Want to check out both rental and residential areas. It'll be a while before a move happens, and we want to check out a few cities. It'll depend on selling our home and employment.

Thanks again.

Which Saturday? There is a Pumpkin Festival downtown on Saturday, Oct. 3. Just an FYI that things might be a little more croweded than usual!

June 9th, 1972. We lived on the other side of the crick from the fish hatchery. June 10th, we lived several miles down stream. Was the night I lost my father.

OH Elk, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that. Was he one of the victims of the flood or was it natural causes?

Elk, Sorry that you lost your father that day. Seeing what we did that day had us all in a very solemn and prayerful mood.

After our short trip out there I'll let you know our thoughts of the area - but I'll do it in a separate post. Thanks again to all of you who contributed to my post.
