Default Recommend me an auto insurance in SD

Hello, all - registering my vehicles in SD. I need to move my auto policy over.

However, good insurance companies are hard to find (unavailable) in SD (i.e. Shelter & Country Financial).

What is a good insurance company that isn't a chain like Geico/Allstate?

Thanks.

State Farm, by all means. We have found them to be the best. I started out with Preferred Risk, went on to Sunshine Mutual, they got bought out by Milbank, then I switched to Farmer's Union. It was good until I got four teenage drivers. That liked to put us in the poorhouse so we switched to State Farm. They're great. I wouldn't go with anyone else.

I concur. Our State Farm insurance rate has gone steadily DOWN since we got it 5 years ago. They are easy to work with and timely in paying claims. I won't go anywhere else. They are by far the cheapest of all the ones i called and asked for quotes from.

Thanks, you two.

State Farm was my backup choice.

Either you insured in Rapid City? If so, would you recommend your agent(s)?

Thanks once again.

Farmers Group!
My agent is in Spearfish.
I was impressed how my daughters claim was handled and it was HUGE - they never once hinted of dropping us, payed expenses timely, and our policy went up like 17 dollars a month after over +-200k in claims.

I would find an agent that handles Center Mutual Insurance (based out of, believe it or not, Rugby North Dakota). The rates are very reasonable and even though my family has had multiple accidents through the years, including having 2 nearly new cars totaled, we were never dropped and only experienced slight premium increases.

To me the mark of an insurance company to keep has very little with the premiums you pay with a clean record, but with how you're treated after some accidents.

Whatever you save in premiums will go up in smoke if forced to pay for high risk insurance.

Progressive, where it is sold at insurance agents, is good if you have a spotless record. One minor incident, they really sock it to you. One word of caution with Progressive.

Are you going to buy a home or get renters' insurance? If so, there are companies in South Dakota such as Allied (big enough company but not a mammoth like Progressive) and De Smet Mutual that may be good ones to check in to for rates. With DeSmet, one has to have homeowners' insurance or renters' insurance to be able to have auto rates, which those are also reasonable. I have been shopping recently with buying a house in the near future and I found those two comapanies to be the best for my needs. A number of companies give a good discount if you have auto and home together.

Kinda thankful my last ticket was 14 years ago. Almost 15 years ago for my last crash.

I know you said you were not looking for a "chain" but I have by far the best rate with Progressive - much better than any other I checked with and I re-check everytime it is up for renewal - even with homeowners policy combos Progressive was much better rate wise with identical coverage.
