We are past the middle of february, the days are getting longer, the sun is moving higher in the sky. Soon the crocuses will be blooming and the geese & cranes will be flying north. We had a couple of snow storms in Hot Springs this winter. I think the longest that any snow was on the ground was about 10 days. The current snowfall began just before 7 A M today and is continuing to come in. Most of it is melting as it falls, but we will probably have some accumulation. The weather map showed Hot Springs to be on the northern edge of the storm, so we didn't expect any snow. However we have 3 or 4 inches so far and should get more. That might indicate that this one may be more than expected as it moves east. So, how has everyone else weathered the winter? Have you been all snuggeled in with fine wine, good books, and other things or have you been out taking on the world?

You've gotten more than we have outside of Custer! It's been falling all day, and I doubt we've seen an inch total!

We've managed to keep snowcover from the last couple of events since the first of the year, but a lot had melted away. I wish we could get at least one more good dumping - I still have piles to burn!

At this rate the burn piles are going to have to wait another year. Or more time to make the piles bigger. Nothing here. I did have an almost close whoops trying to make a turn. Someone else took out two trees on the same road.

Whoooohooo, you mean the Hot Springs area doesn't get too much sticking snow? One more reason to move there!!! I've been watching the weather and it's always at least 10 to 15 degrees warmer around Hot Springs SD than it is where I live now, and the snow at the foot of my driveway is almost up to the top of my van. I like winter, but by the end of February enough is enough! I know you all would like some moisture, though.

Depends on the year and weather pattern on the amount of snow. Normally they get less then the northern hills. But it can and does get dumped on.

That's a fact. This morning we got an inch and a half while the rest of the Hills got nothing. The weather map indicates that it might not be over yet.

The following is an excerpt from a presentation by State Fire meteorologist Darren Clabo, "“My biggest concern is the southern Black Hills, southwestern South Dakota, down to the Pine Ridge Escarpment,” Clabo said. “I’m concerned about western South Dakota."

He also stated that he didn't expect any meaningful relief from the drought this year.

It depends on who you ask when it comes to the drought. I am concerned. Very concerned.

The next couple of months are CRITICAL with regard to getting precipitation events on the High Plains. I am very concerned about drought, particularly further south. Most of Nebraska is listed as D4 drought status, the worst category according to the Drought Monitor. Hopefully above average precipitation will occur this year.

The fuels on the prairie will not be as heavy as the previous four years. Without the fuels the size, severity, and likelihood of fires is reduced. Last summer the big burns were out in the grasslands.

This summer the hills with the bug killed trees, low subsoil moisture and heavier fuels will be the worry. There may be some record setting fires. What worries me is dry line thunderstorm rolls through the hills and lights off a complex of fires.
