NASA's next Space Observatory, Solar Probe Plus, will reside within the Sun's corona and study:

(1) The structure and dynamics of the Sun's Magnetic Fields.

(2) Source of the Solar Wind.

(3) Trace the energy source that heats the Corona and accelerates the Solar Wind.

(4) Explore the plasma and dust near the Sun, it's influence on energetic particles and the Solar Wind.

The probe will use Venus to slow it's approach to the Sun so that it can achieve a stable orbit within 3.7 Million miles of the star's surface. The observatory will use an 8 foot, reinforced, carbon-carbon foam composite heat shield to protect itself from the intense heat and radiation that it will be subjected to and will be launched between 2015 and 2018 according to current sources.

Me either.....Hopefully we will learn more about Coronal Mass Ejections, which is a threat that we have been under estimating. In 1989 a relatively small and weak CME......shut down Quebec's power grid for over 9 hours. It's predicted a really large/powerful CME could shut down half or more of the planet's electrical grid for months, because so many transformers will blow, that it may take literally months to replace them, with economic losses totaling in the Trillions. With enough warning we can shut down the power grid and move satellites to safer orbits; to help at least lessen any overtly severe impacts from a strong CME.

Or create a ring of satellites around earth with shields on them to create a planet wide shield to block the particles

I love that idea....if you have a patent on that technology...then count me in, by all means. . I assume we could at least heavily shield the satellites but with the added weight....I'd guess fuel costs....hence launch costs involved, would increase dramatically.

Too bad we can't shield all the high voltage electrical transmission lines; but with advance notice we can power down the grid. However I'm sure there would be some very negative consequences to shutting it down; even with ample warning....we may have a few days to prepare for the "impact" of the CME. But shutting down the grid...over a continent for instance, would still produce some dire consequences.
