It seems to me both the Moon and Earth would have both been hit multiple times.

They were. Multiple millions of times.

But in all likelihood, only once by a Mars sized object.

So is it thought that either the Earth or Moon would have been hit by a Mars-sized object?

I believe the theory (which isn't just a blind theory, it fits the data) is that roughly 4.5 billion years ago, the earth and the moon were one body, and that early earth was struck by a mars sized object which caused the ejection from the ancient earth of the material that coalesced to become the moon. Prior to that collision, there was no moon.

It's amazing how circular the orbit is. Unfortunately, we'll eventually lose the Moon. I wonder how that will effect things.

I don't think we'll be here to see it.

I tell my wife I'm getting younger. Hypothetically speaking, the tides would eventually cease to exist.
