The point is that something was discovered that could be "Earth-like". Whether it actually supports life is a different topic, and one in which we will never know...at least no time soon. But it does have relevance. For one, it could mean that we are not alone. Aside from that, it ultimately means that there may be the possibility of human colonization of another planet if the technology to get settlers there becomes available and/or there is a need...which may be sooner than later.
