Well what do you think? Is it a flower growing out of the rock? Many say it looks like a shell fragment. What ever it is, it is tall enough to make a shadow. I personally think it is quartz. We need a clearer picture that will give it some depth.
Some initial thoughts have been that it may be more plastic thst's fallen off the rover. That's a bit of a concern as they don't want such debris included in any soil to be sampled. They should get a much closer look at it to be sure. Other thoughts, which I think is more plausible, is that it's a rock with parts of it gleaming from reflection from the sun. It might be quartz or a mix. Why parts would be gleaming but the rest not is a little curious, but if it's a rock, then it might be that it's covered with dust and a few raised spots have been exposed from wind.
You are probably right, Though one had to wonder why such a focus on Mars. I know it's closer then the other worlds but for a long time man has been fascinated with the Red planet even on a cultural level. Years ago the "face' caused quite a stir, And it turned out to be a lump of dirt. I certainly do not think martians are in an underground catina having a party.
