Video game? I think you're thinking of the Matrix. The theory I'm familiar with is that the universe is a giant quantum computer. Everything, stars, planets, black holes, quasars, store information, that information creates more stars, planets, black holes, quasars, and life is based on the quantum programming from which it came. But its not a computer like our laptops or even supercomputers, its constantly running and storing more information evolving with more intelligence.
What may have started as a science fiction speculation—that perhaps the universe as we know it is a computer simulation—has become a serious line of theoretical and experimental investigation among physicists, astrophysicists, and philosophers.
Some technologists and scientists are entertaining the idea that we are all trapped inside someone else's video game. What do you think?
I had no idea there was an actually theory on this, I first heard about it ironically in the video game "Star Ocean : till the end of Time", in which the main characters discover that our universe is a simulation for 4th dimensional beings. Once the beings discover that our universe has spawned individuals that actually have consciousness the corporation that developed it attmepte to reset/erase the similuation, while another faction of 4th dimensional beings want our simulation to be placed safely in a museum far from the interference of their society.
Elon Musk now believes the universe we live in is a billion times more likely than not to be an advanced computer simulation (rather than the real world, whatever that actually looks like)
This would actually explain a lot if you think about it.
This theory is one of many that have been floating around that I saw on of those science shows about 6 years ago.
Just because Musk, Hawking, whoever else believes in something, should we just blindly follow them? He might very well be right when there are scientific facts to support that position. Until then it's just a personal belief.
Assuming this is true, the question remains: who or what created this simulation?
The fact of the matter is that we will never know what the universe is or how it began. It is of course the most fundamental and profound mystery of human existence and cannot be explained or investigated within the confines of mankind's intellectual capacity. The universe is just there.
I suppose the one potentially comforting aspect of the "simulation theory" of the universe is that you may not actually be gone forever once your body dies. Not totally unlike how religious types believe you go to "heaven" for eternity when you die, in a simulated universe you would probably be stored as a file just as everything else was that ever existed in the program.
