That was so long ago, I’m sure they have moved on to Area 58 by now.

My BIL actually worked in Area 51 while in the Air Force. Every morning he would board a plane at McCarren, the windows were blacked out. Could never get a word out of him about what goes on there.

What goes on there is exactly what one would expect ... extremely sensitive technology development and testing ... no flying saucers in spite of what Bob Lazar claims. He's apparently just another nut job.

Half of Americans believe in aliens. I'm assuming they didn't poll nursing home residents.

Well, even when Area 51 was secret, you could see it by hiking to the top of a mountain. I did so in 1996. No need for binocs; the site was visible with the naked eye.

I read that the access to the mountain, formerly legal, did get closed some years back. Maybe that has a little to do with the lack of interest. But probably it is due to just people wanting to hear about “new” secrets instead.

Yes, but they "believe" based on no evidence at all ... it's just a feeling ... intuition. It's kinda like climate change ... some "believe" or "don't believe" but have absolutely no idea of the science behind the subject's legitimacy. It's either what somebody else has told them, or whether they "think" it's true or not.

I UFO existence and visitation is an intriguing subject, and it would be cool if they really are here, but I don't know if they are or not. I'll keep an open mind, but "evidence" isn't nut jobs saying they've been adbucted by space ships.

True, I know what you mean. As it is, this is the internet where there are a lot of different people with a lot of different points of view. Some views are understandable, and some seem pretty off-the-wall.

With respect to Area 51 (also known as "Dreamland"), it's a restricted military test facility. Near Groom Lake, a good number of military aircraft have been tested there before being put to use. Using Google Maps or World, you can see the runways at Area 51. They have added more buildings over the years. Adjoining Area 51 is Yucca Flat which is still pockmarked with craters from numerous bomb tests, including nuclear bombs. I remember back in the latter part of the 1960s, a friend and I drove down to visit some other friends who lived in North Las Vegas. All of Las Vegas was pretty small at the time. There were only a handful of casinos along the strip. Most were in the downtown area. At night, we could see a number of flashes of light from behind the "mountains" to the north. It's very likely to have been from testing bombs. Didn't hear any booms, but then the distance between Area 51/Yucca Flat to Las Vegas is round 100 or so miles away, making sound less likely to hear. The flashes of lights were probably from military aircraft testing bombs.

I understand the A'Le'Inn Restaurant and Bar at Rachel (2010 Population: 54) along the "Extraterrestrial Hwy" is still doing business selling novelties, postcards, snacks and beer to visitors that happen to stop by. There were a few other businesses at Rachel, including its only gas station, all of which have closed up. Except for the A'Le'Inn, there's not much else there except a few alfalfa farms.

As mentioned earlier, the best forums at C-D for the subject of why the chatter of speculation, conjecture and secrets about Area 51 has been reduced is probably better for the Nevada Forum or the Unexplained Mysteries and Paranormal Forum. It's not a subject related to Science or Space.

I dont want to get into a big debate on UFOs or aliens,( I do not believe area 51 has anything related to UFOs/aliens, and doubt they ever did), but...

If Area 51 is for test and experimental aircraft like many claim...where is all the great new aviation tech, new military/space craft? What have they been working on?

The last 'big' thing in aviation I recall was the stealth bomber, this was test/ experimental at one time, but eventually it became public knowledge, people KNOW what it is today.

You do not think these silent super-slow and super-fast craft triangular and cigar-shaped which people see in the sky are aliens do you?

I expect they are back engineered at Area 51, so it would mean we already have these type of flying craft. That is space travel although they are unexplained still.

Why has none of the related technology trickled out to known aircraft then? (experimental/ test aircraft DOES NOT remain experimental/test for decades upon decades, eventually it becomes publicly known aircraft).

I suspect some of them are extraterrestrial and some are manmade.

I think the power source and some of the technology is why they keep it secret, if it was to be released and everyone saw this great technology, people would be asking why it couldnt be used to power cars, trucks, homes, etc. Fossil fuels are too lucrative right now, for something new technology to come out and destroy that.
