"He added that he's worried because he believes NASA is close to finding life and making an announcement about it but wonders what will happen afterward."

So the Planetary Science Division director doesn't know? He "believes"?

It's just some vague statements in hope of drumming up some interests.

The sense I got from reading that, with the concern being primarily on 'what happens afterwards'...tells me, its related to intelligent life on Mars in the distant past.

An announcement like THAT could cause all sorts of unexpected responses, probably not the mass panic that Govt feared at one time in relation to disclosing details on this, but it would probably cause conflicts with the history we are all taught (things may have to change drastically as a result).

It seems to me, ever since that NY Times article back in Dec 2018, its been progressing towards some kind of disclosure and/or announcement, they have been slowly and methodically drip feeding us tidbits of information, priming us in other words, for what comes next...(not to change the topic, just saying this)...I feel they will attempt to scare people into believing there is an off planet threat to our safety/security, as a means of ushering in tougher/stricter CONTROL, and justifying HUGE defense spending, unlike anything we have ever seen so far.

We’ll just have to wait and see. Now what would be exciting, and extremely interesting, is if evidence is found of “life” with right handed amino acids and left handed sugars.

THAT would probably cause more panic versus finding evidence of a past advanced intelligent Martian life!!!

"A key component of NASA’s work is to search for the building blocks and signs of life elsewhere, and we’re excited about the scientific findings of our rovers on Mars currently and upcoming, as well as missions to Europa, Titan, and other places," Beutel said via email. "Just as NASA astronauts landing on the Moon changed our conception of our place in the universe, the discovery of life elsewhere also would be a civilization changing event. As with all discoveries, NASA would work to confirm and share validated information with the world as soon as possible."
NASA are not known for being that bothered about looking very hard for life on other planets, Mars in particular. How will they "work to confirm and validate" their data I wonder ?

Many places in space are visited by one agency only. Are we going to wait until other agencies get their stuff together to get to these places so the data can be validated and confirmed ?
