This is the first time I'm hearing about this infrared telescope called SphereX? Isn't that what the James Webb was going to do also? Or perhaps SphereX can pinpoint where the James Webb is supposed to look?

"NASA has picked Elon Musk's SpaceX to launch a telescope into orbit for a two-year astrophysics mission starting 2024, the agency said in a press release on Thursday.

The mission, called SPHEREx, will cost NASA about $98.8 million.

SPHEREx is a space telescope that NASA said would survey the sky in near-infrared light, which the human eye can't see. The data that it collects would help astronomers understand the evolution of the universe and the creation of galaxies, it said."

It looks to be an all-sky survey telescope, while Webb is more focused on specific targets. The price is right; less than 1% of Webb. The total mission cost is $240 million though.

I'm liking this approach.

SPHEREx will participate in the next Explorer mission NASA plans to launch in 2024. Btw, SPHEREx is supposed to collaborate with Euclid and Wfirst missions that'll let scientists get more information. I think that choosing SpaceX for launching this telescope was the right decision.
