Washington, D.C.—For several decades, scientists have thought that the Solar System formed as a result of a shock wave from an exploding star—a supernova—that triggered the collapse of a dense, dusty gas cloud that contracted to form the Sun and the planets...

Interesting ....So in other words Iron-60 is created in Super Nova's and it's daughter element nickel-60 is found on meteorites thru out our Soalr System so they belive that's the clue as to what started our Solar System if i understood it correctly...

I think most heavy elements are born from novas or supernovas, and since the clue about the timing of the transformation of iron to nickel was about right, then it's a good indicator that this solar system the result of a supernova.

Brian....did you catch this months (oct 2008) Scientific American cover story about the Big Bang might have been the Big Bounce instead. I admit that Quantum Physics is tough for me to grasp but this was an interesting article although i had to read it twice to understand it's basics about how he theorised how the Universe started with an Implosion and then Bounced out of it and finally inertia is what's carrying on the expansion of space and making us think it's a Bang and not an Implosion and then a Bounce.

He uses ''Loop Quantum Gravity'' in his theory and mathematical calculations to figure this out. He's a researcher at the Gravitation and the Cosmos at Penn State University.

Here's the story for those interested.

I didn't see that story, but it's an idea that's been around awhile.
