Can we find a nanny for medically-involved child
We have a three year old son with seizures and other medical problems including developmental delays in all areas. We currently live in Pennsylvania where we receive skilled nursing care for him in our home and at school which allows both my husband and me to work. We are considering a relocation to either the Maryland/Washington DC area or Connecticut to be near family at some point in the future but are concerned about finding a qualified child-care provider. I am learning that it will be very difficult to get the same nursing care we are currently receiving here in other states. Does anyone know if there are nanny agencies that specialize in children with medical problems? The only place I know to look is Babysitters, Nannies, Child Care and Senior Home Care - Care.com. Any other suggestions?

My only thought is that if the state is subsidizing the care in PA to be careful when relocating since there have been a lot of budget cuts and there can be long waiting lists involved. Some states provide more services than others and I think PA is one of the better ones. I would try to connect with parent groups of children with special needs in the areas that you are interested in.

Yes I am learning that PA seems to be one of the better states. I will try to find some other parent groups for opinions. I know in the DC area nannies are widely available but have not been able to figure out where people find them.

Maryland Family Network - I came across this link for Maryland and I could not decide if it were for people getting public funded services or not but this is the kind of website that you might be looking for. As a mother of a 25 year son with special needs and having moved around the country, if I could find any contact that seemed like a possibility, I contacted them and they could usually point me in the right direction or the person they referred me could eventually get me where I needed to be. Always keep in mind that when you contact another area, they will think they have the best to offer, I learned that the hard way. Best is a relative term.

I am not in DC but have have several children with milder special needs. One is delayed and receives several hours of services a week. We get our nannies from care.com. I pick through the listings and have always been able to find someone that will work. Good luck.
