It is unfortunate, but any child who is the least bit different is often bullied.
I am not sure that the solution is to be in a school for autistic children though as there are few of these around and many are not great as schools. I am glad it is working for the girl in the story, but I haven't seen any autism schools here that I would want my grandchildren in.
It all depends on the environment. i work for a private, special needs school specializing in students on the autism spectrum, and those with other cognitive disorders. Our school is very small, and is a godsend for most. They see they really aren't different, they realize there are kids just like them out there. Kids who didn't dare dance, now dance and aren't laughed at.. They wear what they want, focus on their obessions, flap, stim..it's all considered normal..I've seen kids come in beaten down from being bullied..and they metamorphasize into popular at outer school. They have play dates, and they never miss school. I only wish our environment could progress more..there should be a school like this in every county.
Since every other child is diagnosed with autism these days, I find it hard to believe there are enough bullies to pick on all of them.
