I am a mother of a 13 yr old. I think she might be a very high functioning AS, but I realize this is a medical diagonosis. She is a superb athlete, which I believe would rule it out, but she has so many of the other characteristics.
We have a pedicatrican who I trust, and I think he has a keen interest and expertise in autism, although strangely, I never thought this was an issue for us. Now that she is a tween, I find the characteristics hard to ignore or dismiss. I need some guidance.

You need to go to a licensed clinical psychologist to do an assessment. They can figure out if it's aspergers, general social ackwardness, or what's going on. It's critical that you go to a psychologist, not a pediatrian, for this diagnosis. Psychologists are training to make this assessment, pediatricians aren't (unless they are a developmental and behavior specialist, and then I would still question it).
Being a superb athlete does not rule it out.
