Our family is considering a move from Arkansas to Kansas City due to a change in our insurance coverage.
We are wondering if any of the good Missouri school districts for special needs (from what I have read is Park Hill, Liberty, Kearney) allow private ABA techs to accompany a child at school? Our son is not progressing as much as he could to due to behavior and we believe (as so does our current school's BCBA) that he could learn better and progress if he had that support during school hours in addition to home or clinic hours. Our current school district will not allow it and that coupled with our insurance not paying for any ABA providers in our state we are looking for better options. Thanks!
I can not praise the Park Hill School District enough. Blue Springs is also a good School District. Columbia, MO is also good. My children were in Park Hill. We did extensive research on MO after our children were diagnosed in another State. We relocated our family specifically for this District. While they don't do ABA THerapy in School, most of their Teachers went to KU and quite a few have an Autism Degree in addition to their Teaching Degree. The District is EXTREMELY well versed in Autism. The OT's, the SLP's, the Teachers are all experienced in ABA - it is incorporated into the classroom setting =) Stay OUTSIDE of Kansas City. Kansas City had their accreditation revoked a few years ago because their education was so bad. Look at Parkville, Liberty, Blue Springs and Columbia. Stay completely away from Lee's Summit. They are wrapped up in so many lawsuits pertaining to Special Needs.
Park Hill (and a number of other metro public school districts) have absolutely had a history of placing students with ASDs to private placements where the students receive 1:1 ABA services with BCBA and BCaBA therapists, in lieu of public school placement. Typically in cases where there is severe maladaptive behavior that cannot be sufficiently addressed by their programs, and the placements typically last until the behavior has shown sufficient improvement for reintegration to the district. They do not, however, continue the ABA therapeutic partnership once reintegration has occurred (though the parents may opt to do so privately out of pocket).
