I have two step sons with fragile x 15yrs and 17yrs! they are the funniest wonderful kids I have ever met! they teach me more about life than I can teach them! See the joy in each of your beautiful wonderful kids! You have a wonderful gift in each of them! They are at the end of the day thier own person, they have thoughts feeling wishes and dreams like all of us! When I first met b he didn't speak, comunicate or interact because no one treated them like they could, now 6 years latter! I can't stop laughing at thier comments! I love getting the giggles with them! they always make a bad day a better one! The 15 year old rides a quad bike in a club, is working on school placement at a car wash and tells me he is saving his money to buy his dream car when he is 18 with his pocket money he gets from his chores! not bad for a kid who was told would never speak, tie his own shoe laces or anything else for that matter! He wants to be a chef!!! An I will do everything I can possibliy do to make it happen for him, if he will let me as he is very indepent minded now. I can do it he says, I;m a little man now, I'm 15!!!!!hahaha I wouldn't change him for the world! He is amazing! Two of the best people I have met in my life have Fragile X, a brother and sister. Their aunt also had Fragile X. While your son may be diagnosed MR, usually Fragile X children are extremely high functioning, with winning personalities. I know that you are going thru alot right now, but the best support system you can find is parents of other children with special needs in your area. Is your son in special education kindergarten? There may be parent groups in your area.
I have a child with a disability, and sometimes, I secretly wish she did not have the problems that she has. Especially when people tell me about their kids who are so brilliant, talented, whatever. I then talk about my daughter, and admit she will probably never go to Stanford on an honors scholarship. However, she is caring, loves animals, and works hard. She has gifts, academic gifts are not part of her package. It is okay. Just the way it is.
