We are the proud parents of a 6 year old boy with special needs. He has a rare genetic condition called Soto Syndrome. He is non-verbal, developmentally disabled, and has been diagnosed with autism. We currently reside in Connecticut, and although the services aren't awful, they also aren't great. My wife and I are fortunate in the sense that we are able to move easily and are looking to do so. We have been told by some that Pennsylvania is a wonderful place because of the many schools, and they offer Medicaid option for my son which is not income dependent on the parents. We currently have private insurance for him and it is a battle. Co-pays currently run us about $7000 a yr for speech and OT.

Looking for advise and others experience to the best states in the country, especially special education schools that specialize in Developmental Disabilities and Apraxia. We are willing to go anywhere for him. Thank You!

I had heard that California was a good state for autism services. Here's a website that seems to provide a lot of information.

It depends upon what part of California. Not all parts of the state are equal. Also, the cost of living in California makes a lot of things prohibitive.

I suggest Pennsylvania, New York or New Jersey.

Paducah,Ky. has an awesome Easter Seals center. Telethon every November raises several hundred thousands of dollars for support and I've heard they do great work with the kids and adults.

If considering California, contact the regional centers in California in areas where you may want to live.
They can provide you with that info.

Generally those of any age diagnosed as Autistic are offered the standard of 20 hrs a month of respite care.

We are looking into re-locating to Crescent City, CA because the COLA is lower and it is near the ocean.
They have many services for DD, Autism I know, but all I know if is for the adults. We live 5 hrs from that area so all my research was done online just recently

The Fort Dick area of Crescent City is less foggy and dreary. Yet not far from the Ocean though cost might be a little more. Gasquet, Eureka, McKinleyville are also low COLA areas for California.

Sacramento seems a great area for resources except I cannot imagine an Autistic person living there. They do not like stimulation hence why I suggested the other areas above

I would not recommend CA. We live just 20min outside of sac and the services are good (we have the mind institute) but good therapists are like revolving doors. Also if your child is medically fragile this is not the place to live as they are implementing extremely strict protocols for medical exemptions.

We battle with insurance as well and pay 400 month just for copays. It looks good on paper, but the ABA companies are always at the mercy of so many restrictions from the insurance company that they start treating your child like a number, or a part of a quota they need to meet.

Not to mention it’s very expensive. There are options like medical and ihss but for us the pros don’t outweigh the cons. Too much gov over reach in CA.

Hi mikeandaija2009 --

I'm the Grandma of a Special Needs girl, age 5, so kind of familiar with these things. Likely what you are looking for are is a state with Medicaid waivers. Here is a website which may be of help. Good luck to you!

My babycenter friends from our autism list agree that Pennsylvania is one of the best states for both the medicaid waiver and for services. It does vary a bit by county, but the waiver is statewide.

If you are looking for a private special needs school, you can see this list of PA. I am not sure if the public schools will pay any tuition for these though. The public schools do a pretty good job of serving autistic kids there.

The first 4 of these are public schools. There may be other public ones on later pages.
