I believe my adult son has Asperger's. He's 30 going on 18. I started this recent thread.

Asperger's - would you rather NOT know you had it?

We've got some great programs for our daughter, just have to get her involved.
My son was diagnosed with Disruptive Behavior Disorder at 3, later a speech delay, then ADHD, then around 5 they said ADHD plus borderline Autism SD?!?!.... Don't let the label define her. I think Aspergers is no longer an official diagnosis as they have the autism "spectrum" as the official diagnosis.

My son made major progress through speech therapy, social group, occupational therapy and also a therapeutic preschool. Anything you can get through a children's pediatric therapy services would be recommended. Make a list of her strengths and weaknesses. Do your research and see how best you can help her work on the weaknesses.

One major thing that worked for me was calming my anxiety about his "diagnosis". Not everyone is the same as adults, so it doesn't make sense that everyone has to fit a certain mold as kids either.

Best wishes in finding the appropriate professionals and programs to help her, and most of all to focus on the positive on your journey with her!

Labels are primarily useful for coding purposes and insurance funding. In terms of behavioral health, the diagnosis is important mainly insofar as it may guide what types of interventions are most evidence-based. Access to resources is often largely dependent on having a diagnosis.

What is more important than the diagnostic label is understanding and addressing any symptoms that are acting as barriers to functioning.
