You might also want to explore the South Perry neighborhood (a specific lower south hill area) which has an up and coming commerical area at approximately Perry and 13th. I'd also reccommend Browne's Addition (roughly between first and thrid avenues west of Maple) which has great old homes, interesting new development, some nice neighborhood restaurants and the museum of arts and culture.

One more on the west end of downtown. You said you've already seen the Davenport but this provides a look at the davenport district/west end you might find interesting:

Is Qualchan area and Eagle area in South Hill a good place to raise a family with good schools and low crime? Thank you.

Generally speaking, yes. Eagle Ridge is a large planned community with nice homes, trails, easy access to golf, etc. and feeds into good schools. There are quite a few families there. The Qualchan area is generally nice as well. The only area that is more problematic in that part of town is commonly known as vinegar flats. It is on the east side of the highway and a little further north than the Qualchan golf course. I don't think its rife with crime but it is certainly less desireable than the other areas down there.

Eagle Ridge is a newly planned housing area just off I-195. There are many parks, open areas there for the kids to play. Housing starting in the upper 200's and goes from there. The area around qualchan is nice. If you're near the golf course you shold be fine, closer to I-90.. then I'd look around a bit. All upper areas of south hill above say 29th is nice areas with nice parks and schools. I would stay away from the hospital areas near SHMC and Deaconness though... Hope this helps

When I say generally I meant that I think the area is really quite nice, I wouldn't be worried about living there. The only drawback is that you're probably limited to the development without getting in the car (not too bad because the development has trails, parks, etc) and while you're only 10 minutes to downtown you have to get on and off the highway to go anywhere (not a traffic issue just different than city streets). With that budget and for something less than 15 years old I would check out the upper south hill, from 37th up past 57th and roughly palouse highway/freya to bernard. The area within a mile or two in circumfrance from the intersection of 57th and Regal has several newer developments with nice homes and it is a pretty nice area of town (Regal is mostly commerical and apartments so don't let it fool you).

I thought the Eagle Ridge area was lovely when we were driving around. You could get quite a nice home for mid-300's and up. Unfortunately out of our price range since we're looking to financially downsize. I also remember a place called Twin Bridges. Was that in the same area? There were alot of empty lots and great floor plans. :~) D

Correction
My husband tells me that the Twin Bridges development was in the valley. We saw so much over there in a short amount of time that I have a hard time keeping it straight. :~) D

I have posted about different area's around Washington that would be better than Spokane. I have been here almost 8 yrs, and I dislike it very much. I have yr after yr waited and listen to my friends about staying and I am still not Happy in this area. I will finally get to move when the school yr is out,had planned to move the 1st of Nov. but for the kids sake desided to wait the school yr out.
I am reading alot of things about Spokane that I have found to be true:Trouble w/ schools,I drive my daughter everyday clear across down so she can be in a school that works for her.The middle school in my area has just plain stuck-up and rude people.
Also as stated there is alot of placement of sex offenders from other areas is very high. Knowing someone who is a sex offender from Seattle, he said "I chose Spokane when I was realesed cause there are no other areas that will take my level of sex offender".
No kidding on the lice thing. We were not even finished moving all the way and my daughter had already got head lice. I had never before seen them, but in the yrs living here I fought the darn things first 5 yrs. Finally that seems to be under control.
So now that I have slammed on Spokane I will give my opion on the good things: it is lower cost of living, I have met some great people, and you can not beat the beautiful land.
It is my thought that if I were not a single Mom I might be happier here. I wanted to go out last my kids were gone and I wanted to here live music. I looked for someplace to hear a live Rock band and on a Saturday night there was nothing!
