I am considering moving to Spokane and will possibly be returning to college. The west has always had a certain appeal to me and the inland Pacific Northwest in particular. I am currently debating between Boise and Spokane but leaning toward Spokane because Boise seems like it might get a bit too hot in the summer. Also even if you whine about your winters I'm sure they pale in comparison to a Great Lakes winter. A few questions.

1. How far is Eastern Washington U from Spokane and is it relatively easy to commute? Do a lot of people commute?

2. Why so much Spokane bashing on this forum? It seems like every two seconds you hear something about Slumkane or Spocompton. Anybody have positive perspectives?

3. I understand Spokane has a reputation for crime. Is this something you can easily avoid in the sense that it mostly affects those who choose to get themselves involved in drugs and the underworld or is it dangerous even for those who mind their own business.

4. For those who know what are the upsides of Spokane over Boise, the downsides?

5. Is it true there are as many white supremacists around as they say?

6. How mountainous is the Spokane area?

7. Does the Spokane area have upward potential?

It's about 15 miles. If you don't want to drive, there used to be commuter buses that ran regularly. I assume they are still in operation.

If you consider me among the "bashers", please note that about 90% of what I post is tongue-in-cheek. The other anti-Spokane posts are beyond my control. Keep in mind that Spokane is a very easy target, for many reasons. These will become clearer to you if you move there.

The former.

I have to disqualify myself, since I don't know much about Boise, other than its name is a weird mispronunciation of the French word meaning "woods."

Without knowing who "they" are who say that, I maintain that the whole Eastern Washington / North Idaho racist bit is heavily overplayed in the media. The vast majority of the people in Spokane are as tolerant as anyone you'd ever want to meet.

6. How mountainous is the Spokane area?
There are sizeable mountains to the north and east, within a 30 minute drive. To the west and south, it's rolling hills, prairie and tundra for miles and miles. And miles.

7. Does the Spokane area have upward potential?
Absolutely. Given its relative low cost of living and depressed housing and job market, Spokane has nowhere to go but up.

spokane is much much more of an attractive place to live over bosie; been to boise and found it way to hot and flat and brown for my liking........spokane has quit a variety of geographic areas within a 20 mile radius.......you have mountain (ski resort right northeast of town; with an international one within 100 miles)...............rolling high plains desert to the west and south; major mountains to the noth and east with the city itself situated smack in the middle of hills, plains and valleys and a beautiful river runs right through it with a number of falls that you can view on your hike over the miles and miles of trails that cover this variety of terrain. one of spokane's big plusses are its abundance of beautiful city parks......i've never been in a city with as many perfectly maintain city parks; seems like every few miles you have a large beautiful city park..............lots of outdoor waterpark type playgrounds for kids and all parks allow dogs on leashes. there's a beautiful riverfront park in downtown that has much to offer for walking/hiking and year round entertainment. spokane has a great art museum as well.... real estate is very reasonable and also low cost utilites. spokane is a major center for health care in this region. summers don't get humid and the heat stays around the 80's with sometimes hotter summers... the winters are not as dry say as montana but not as wet cold as the coast but spokane get colder in the winter then the coast but it's a dryer cold so imo much more tolerable then the warmer winter tems of the coast but much much wetter and that wetter cold goes right through you to the bone; dry cold is easy to suffer with proper winter gear........if you were to see first hand spokane and then boise, well there wouldn't be a debate...spokane would win your pick hands down!!!...........hope this helps.. (and racism is everywhere; our area just has the misfortune of have some "famous" skinhead groups out of idaho near us)

Default Skinheads

Do they bother people there much? We are moving there soon and my niece and nephew are part black. I know we can't protect them from everything but I don't want things to get crazy!

spokane has lots of biracial people, but since i'm not on of them then i can't swear by what it'd be like to live in this area if i were........i just can't believe it'd be a problem, i don't see open racist remarks being flung around while i'm in a group of white people........and when i was in the south this was fairly common to wittness, so hopefully your family won't experience any problems here if you live here.

Person who posted that should post back and let us know they're okay.

White supremacists aren't all that bad to have around the area.

They keep out the cancer of progressive/socialists who then can't move to the area for fear of being branded guilty by association.

People in rural areas of the PNW are very tolerant and have a live and let live philosophy. So if a neighbor wants to be bat poop crazy, that is OK. He can believe what he wants to believe. But they also won't tolerate racist hate crimes. There is social pressure about that sort of thing, so your chances of having a cross burned on your lawn are just about zero. And your kids will have perfectly nice friends in school who don't care what their skin looks like because it is live and let live in the area.

The kids might have to fit themselves into the local social patterns, but if they have trouble making friends, it isn't going to have anything to do with their race. If they can be halfway friendly, or play sports and join spots teams, or join the 4H, or join clubs for whatever their interests are, they will have friends quickly.
