Default safe fun area to live in spokane area

My husband and I may have to leave Woodland Park, CO for a job offer in Spokane. We are 52 and 53, no kids, like to party in small bars where "everybody knows your name" . We love to meet people and we want a safe surrounding. any ideas from anyone? Thanx.....patty and jim

There are many choices in the Spokane area. Depending really on what you like hopefully one can fit for you. Around downtown Spokane you will most likely fun the bars and night life, but if you want more suburban life were you drive to the bar, and slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can choose that too.

Check out various neighborhoods in Spokane Valley, Dishman, Opportunity, or Millwood. Lots of housing and close to shopping and basic needs. Liberty Lake is a very nice up and coming area, but is one of the furtherest east Spokane suburbs. Even still, it isn't more then a 15 minute drive into Spokane.

Within the Spokane City limits there are many neighborhoods but I don't know to much about bars.

When I think of bars, I am thinking of small town bars, which you could find in towns outside of Spokane for sure. While these locations are too far to commute to work from Spokane, it is done by some people. Davenport, Deer Park, Medical Lake, etc. Davenport being the furthest of those, and is about 40 minutes drive. Deer Park is about 25 minutes, and Medical Lake about 18 minutes. Around these towns, or in them, you could certainly find a local bar with probably a dedicated group of people. You could find them in Spokane too, but again, I don't specialize on this.

Couer D'Alene have a lot of small bars. The downtown seems safer at night to me.

There are a lot of small bars in Spokane Valley too.

Liberty Lake has a lot of newer housing so it's a great place to be. It is in the middle. Plus has a beautiful lake and freeway access.

Try the Hi neighbor on Monroe.

The Checkerboard on East Sprague.

The Swamp near Sunset Hill.

Nice, diverse crowds. Friendly people. Savvy, quick barstaff. The Swamp even has a nice outdoor patio for patrons who have not yet kicked the tobacco habit.

Downtown has nearly all the swankier, more famous bars. I'm not 100% familiar with other areas but try the Valley or South Hill for more neighborhood-ish bars and fun places to go. I would say that the South Hill is going to appeal to a more affluent crowd where the Valley is going to offer more down to earth establishments. It's been years, but I've always liked the Satellite downtown or The Elk in Browne's Addition. For the Valley, I think you're best off with Ichabod's on Sprague/Pines or The Max at Mirabeau. But I don't go out drinking as much as I used to so I may not be the best for that.

As far as a safe surrounding, you're not going to have much of a problem anywhere in Spokane but you probably want to stay away from walking around downtown too much at night. Elsewhere, if the neighborhood looks icky then stay away. In Spokane, it's really that easy.

It's really as easy as just finding a place that looks nice on the surface? I haven't found that to be a universal truth in other cities. What about thugs burgling nicer areas near bad areas that spawn said thugs, since those (bad) areas lack high-end bling to steal? Sometimes only one street or alley separates bad areas from decent ones.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the South Hill in specific areas. These neighborhoods tend to be some of the most welcoming in Spokane, and aren't as "affluent" as others would suggest. Perhaps for Spokane, but not for other areas of the state or country. They have real charm, and are some of the oldest homes in Spokane with the most history. That said, most have been extensively remodeled at least once.

Specifically, the areas surrounding Comstock Park and Manito Park, and the area between Bernard and Lincoln between 29th and about 14th. Those areas will I think provide a good fit for you. Take a look and see for yourself.
