This story makes me overwhelmingly sad and furious : An old, frail, defenseless man who, in addition, was a WWII hero, was robbed and beaten to death by thugs...

One of the suspects has just been arrested.

We have property well north of Spokane and are hoping to build a house there in a few years to retire. We would of course spend time in Spokane as it's the largest nearby city. This incident and another which made national news recently make Spokane sound like some sort of a backwoods hellhole. Is it that bad?

No it's really not. This incident is clearly an outlier for Spokane. If you want to retire, I would sugges the outskirts where you own property. I feel safe anywhere in Spokane, however there are areas that others would likely want to avoid. IMO, these little pukes aren't indicative of Spokane as a whole.

I like Spokane in a lot of ways......the weather is very nice IMHO.

What is the purpose of pointing out the color of the perp and the victim? If it's racial and selective the only purpose is likely to inflame bigots. Now, there's a way to solve problems.

Sadly this is the 2nd incident committed by young blacks on whites in one week. No, it may not be racially motivated but it should raise some issues about the lack of morals and empathy that these young perpetrators have and the need to change it. Ironically, Obama commented on the Martin murder, yet has remained silent on these two.

I was sickened and heartbroken when I first read this story a few days ago. Very, very senseless. Did this elderly man need to get beaten and killed to get robbed? He had no chance against these much younger and stronger degenerate animals. BTW, why isn't the national media screaming about this like they did with you know what incident??

Why are Americans so obsessed with race? Taking incidents like these and using them to score some kind of cheap political point and/or even worse, race points.

Absolutely mental.

Not one word to recognize the 89 year old WW2 veteran who took a bullet in defense of his country. Beaten to death (with a flashlight) by two thugs for no apparent reason. (Thankfully, I bet your father & grandfather or other Canadian WW2 vets.....appreciated his service & would have indicated this.....as opposed to lecturing us on how we should "think".).

No one here is "obsessed", but some of us wonder why.....& WTH is going on here.

(& what's "mental" is that after reading accounts, tweets, & stories of this tragedy & the one in Duncan OK, one wonders what is influencing some of these angry black teens & how to prevent the next tragedy from taking place.)

Shorty, thank you for being a great American & a Hero.
