It's rare to see a police officer in downtown Spokane. I've lived in places where crime was so bad, the police would always be everywhere.
i don't understand why ur bragging on this! my husband is a police officer x17yrs and noticed this, but in a bad way!! especially since most store clerks/our hotel clerks were telling us 'make sure you lock ur cars as there are tons of break-ins in downtown'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO I WILL SAY IT LOUDLY WHERE WERE THE POLICE??? husband and i were actually joking each day that went by and we did not see ONE cop, i think on day 4 of our trip, we saw one on i-90!!!!!!!!! NOT A GOOD THING. My complaint about Spokane is that once you get outside of downtown it's not very nice. can u spell U-G-L-Y? Wendy (or anyone else): I'm looking for a house. Where can I find a nice pre-1940 home in a nice older neighborhood? I've yet to find any nice neighborhoods here in Spokane. Most of the older neighborhoods I've seen are tremendously run-down. The ones I've seen that are only moderately rundown have a lot of newer houses mixed in, all but destroying the character of the neighborhood. I don't think a 1970's bi-level belongs next to a 1900 Victorian! south hill sounds like ur destination... |

some of the posters on this BB use the saying...'stick ur head in the sand' and everything will be alright. spokane has many good things but many, many negatives too. from reading so many posts from ppl who don't live there, seems like a lot of them like to ignore and even deny the negatives! i feel because they are trying to see it as the perfect 'utopia' and it is NOT. i feel bad for them because they could potentially make a bad move and NOT be happy. i could see things about spokane that i would be able to get past, and then some that i am not so sure i could ever be happy with....that said, we are making our decision on where to move, based on atleast 2 or 3 different states/cities so we will compare and not make a very expensive, but WRONG move. i mean the one thing that sticks out in my mind about spokane is, how ugly it is 'in the middle and out and around'. ick! i mean thats something you'd have to look at EVERYDAY, all the time!!! |

i know the downtown area here where the older homes have been renovated and the neighborhood livened up....the owners have money and really used only the best in their remodeling....as a result, the price of the homes shot up astronomically and the area is very sought after by the upper middle class who want an updated, old home. They are BEAUTIFUL. No shortcuts taken by them!! |

panhandling is everywhere, right. however, difference is the spokane beggars are VERY COMFORTABLE in being aggressive by APPROACHING ppl in the street, mall, starbucks-yes, all the places we watched it happen!!!!! how annoying for the locals...and unnerving for visitors!!! the beggars we have always seen here in our home town and also others places while visiting, have never been this b*llsy!!! normally they stand on the street corners.............silent and in their own world!!!!! but not in spokane!!
Most of the homeless people I've seen don't seem too bashful about approaching other people. I guess you must be pretty lucky to live in a place where the homeless keep themselves at the fringes. you didn't see the 'couple' that was smoking it........they were st*oned!!!!! come on soupguru!!!!! Exactly how does a person look stoned? my husband is from BUFFALO, cant get much worse a winter than there. he said the roads in spokane are really bad, doesn't remember his hometown ever being so bad..... even the awesome realtor that drove us all around was complaining on how slow the county is to fix/repair.....he was being honest w/us-which we greatly appreciated..... I apologize for assuming you didn't have any familiarity with the state of road maintenance in the temperate climates. along w/snow comes the many days of gray that spokane is known for...a big change from where ur from, just get ready. I'm not from San Diego. I've lived quite a few places and there's one thing I know: I don't want to live here any more. |

Yes, I guess I have been lucky. It was also a first for my husband. I also told my brother about it, he and his wife travel all the time, in the U.S. and out-he's never been approached by a homeless person. Nor had he seen it. Exactly how does a person look stoned? Why are you questioning My experience on MY trip? Why is it SO unlikely that-oh my gosh!-someone was smoking p*t in Spokane?? I find it very strange that you would be SO unrealistically DEFENSIVE of the place!! Almost like you are trying to 'downplay' ANY negative re:Spokane!! And you've never been there!!! How very weird. According to my husband/AND ONE OF HIS CO-WORKERS WHO WAS IN THE SAME ROOM WITH HIM-a total of 26yrs of police work between the two of them-IT'S VERY UNLIKELY THAT HOMELESS PPL ROLL THEIR OWN CIGARETTES AND MUCH MORE LIKELY THAT THEY PURCHASE THE GENERIC BRAND OF CIGARETTES. AND, AGAIN, I WILL SAY.....YES, WE SAW A TOTAL OF 3 PPL (2 were together) SMOKING A JOINT AND THEY WERE HOMELESS!!!!!!!!! Don't mean to be rude, but you seem to live in a fantasyland of some sort. I'm not from San Diego. I've lived quite a few places and there's one thing I know: I don't want to live here any more.[/quote] Why don't you just move to Spokane sight unseen?? You might as well, it seems like you are h*ll bent on trying to prove the place the perfect utopia. However, lalala/twilight zone that sounds. Gosh, Spokane is a nice town, but not all THAT!!! |

As unlikely as just lighting up a joint in public, which you yourself state is highly unusual behavior? Or were they wearing tie-dye too? |

I think maybe if you tone down the exclamation points and all caps, people will tend to listen to you a little more. Otherwise you come off as a whiny 12 year old. Intelligent discourse is hard to find in internet discussions and I don't think I'm the only one that sees those as signals to tune out most of what you're saying. Your hysteria makes me unwilling to give you the benefit of the doubt with what you're saying. I see you as someone who over reacts to a lot of things. Everything is evil and out to get you. Anything around that corner is dangerous. When the local news channel airs the promo for their nightly news by saying something like "What common item found in your fridge can kill you?! Find out at 11!", I bet you tune in. As for my opinion on what you specifically asked about, a police presence can mean a couple of things. For instance, where I live now I hardly ever see a policeman, simply because there is no need for them to be here. I think that's a great sign. No one can argue that's a problem. I also lock my car doors at night too because, well... not doing it is just kind of stupid now, isn't it? I think someone reminding you to lock your car doors is weird since it should be instinct for everyone at this point anyway. Or a lack of police presence could mean there aren't enough of them and they're being used elsewhere. That is a problem. But nowhere have I seen you give me a reason to believe it's anything other than there being no need for them to be a presence all the time. As for Spokane being ugly outside of downtown, I have no idea about that. I haven't been there but I will be going soon. Let me get back to you on that. Once again, arguing on the internet is an amazing waste of time so I don't know why we're bothering. Maybe I should accept the fact that you're not going to understand why we're all not just taking your word for everything you say Spokane is. Maybe I should accept the fact that you're going to take our discussion personally. Maybe you should accept the fact that no one really cares about your point if you get hysterical. |

Spokane is wonderful. It's crime-free, there are no cops around because it's so safe. Doesn't that sound like a place you'd wanna be? Move outta my way, I'm goin!
The homeless ppl have so much time on their hands, that they wrap their own cigarettes. Can you believe it? How cool is that. They are also so friendly that they love to come up to random ppl mumbling incoherent and jumbled sentences, all the while smiling wide-eyed at you! Want some company while relaxing at Starbucks? You betcha, they'll oblige! One can even smoke p*t while walking down the street, another plus of Spokane's apparent 'need-minimal-police-manpower' motto! Remember, Spokane is so safe, they don't need any! And, if by chance, you do get stopped while lighting up...just say it's a rolled cig! If you're visiting the area, the hotel clerks and even store cashier are so kind and caring that they frequently remind you to 'lock your car doors in downtown'. How sweet. They must just be that nice there in Spokane. Oh and one last thing, lack of police presence, don't see one police car/trooper/anything resembling one-for 4 days? Oh, you bet, that's cuz Spokane is so safe remember? Or, maybe it's because they were all at one call for 4 days.........wow, what a doozie of a call that must've been. Gotta go set my alarm for the 11 o'clock news cuz they just might have a health warning that I must heed, seeeeee yaaaaaa!!!!! ![]() |
